best trail

First time hiking in Mendon Ponds Park, there is a variety of trails to choose from. Choose the East Esker Trail due to being a moderate trail that is dog friendly with hilly terrain. The trail was better than expected, a great workout! Did not see any waterfall, but there was a swamp & a pond. Definitely coming back in the fall time for the foliage!

The only downside was the horse poop in the middle of the trail, but the dog enjoyed smelling it!

Great hike, but very steep all the way up with lots of slippery rock surfaces. The dog did great. Bring shoes with good tread!

Awesome park staff is very friendly helpful

Beautiful hike, but really wet through the meadow.

Pros: 5 star view, connections to several other trails, new parking area, some historical relics of the old casino and tramway, accessible to the town of beacon.

Cons: obvious signs of overuse: graffiti, litter, worn out side trails and short cuts, crowds on the weekends; Mud and running water throughout the trail regardless of season, 85% of the trail is loose rock.

Verdict: a nice doable half day hike, if it weren’t for the views, I would pass and choose more favorable terrain elsewhere in the area.

Easy start , moderate climb to the fire tower.

After all the rain the Southern Tier received this week, water levels were high but not exorbitantly so - you could still see the shale formations under the stream and behind the waterfalls, and many tributary creeks were flowing in the woods. Perfectly gorgeous hike on a beautiful, cool, party-sunny day, a rarity this summer! It was an excellent workout, too. I would very highly recommend these trails, and hope to come back soon.

Great wide trail with beautiful views of the lake. I will be going again

What a great hike! Beautiful views! The trail itself is in really nice condition. Although it is rated moderate you have to be in shape to climb this trail. There are several nice areas to rest and take in the spectacular scenery. I know my dogs were hoping for some water to romp in....not this hike!

Awesome hike. Unfortunately the All Trails app was ABSOLUTELY useless. My location kept bouncing back to the physical location of the cellular towers and not my location on the trail. Luckily Google Maps worked and I was able to navigate.

A really nice place for all. Beautiful

The GPS does not take you to a parking lot. Once you get there, it is a gravel wide path. It goes about a mile and then dead ends. Not at all what All Trails maps it out to be. It is completely unremarkable. Too lush for any views. However, When you first get in, you will see a trail off to the right (green marker). It is a well planned completely UP trail to a nice view. There is a parking lot up there so it must also be a turn out for a look out.

An incredible country trail through farmland and woods. Short trail for biking yet well worth the ride out and back. Plenty of parking at both ends. Easily accessible .

Fun with the kids!!!

well marked trail with a decent climb at the beginning.

Fun short hike. Beautiful view from top. 35 mins up (I’m mid-30’s, fit and got some good sweat going) 20 mins down. Several families with small children doing it. Group next to us at top said it took them 50 mins with two kids under 6 years old.

Me and my two daughters Tessa (10) and Nora (8) did this hike today and it was well worth it. Took about an hour to reach the top and the views were great at the top. Not a bad hike at all, would definitely do it again

A quarter of the trail is closed and not kept up, otherwise it would be a nice little trail.

Nice short hike. Luckily I caught a time that wasn’t too busy. Most of the hike is really like a walk until you get closer to the summit then it becomes a scramble. Like a previous comment said, I encountered a hiker with a dog off leash which came right up to my dog who is reactive towards other dogs when he is on leash. Make sure to be on the look out if you also have a reactive dog. Payout is more than I could have hoped.

Good for beginners. Avoid after rain, some parts may be treacherous.

Fun hike especially on a hot day. My daughters loved to swim in each of the three waterfall pools. I agree with those who say it is a good beginner hike to the first waterfall. Gets a bit rocky after that

very rough. expect a lot of ups and downs. moderate is putting it lightly. great trail though.

This is a beautiful little State Park, but the trails are not well marked or well maintained. The trail head is at the end of the upper parking lot but there are no maps or trail photos. It is supposed to be a loop, but the trail just ends. The Falls are easily accessible from the upper parking lot. The Park doesn't seem to be attended by a ranger and there is no comment box.

Great short hike. Water running fast because of recent rains. Beautiful camping park

worth a trek up if you're in the area. the views from the top are great and the steep trail gives a nice taste of adirondack hiking without the endurance requirements of an adk high peak.

Go in the morning to avoid late walkers. Hiking poles will benefit but not essential. Great views.

Inaccessible due to complete overgrowth. Take a machete and bug spray!

short moderate trail. kids, dogs and tree roots. drought has stolen most of the the water from the falls. flame was lit, and was cool to hear kids get excited once they spotted it. makes for a nice hike and set of woods. went off trail into the woods so the dog could case some chipmunks. nice steady flow of people all day. parking lot is an excellent size. useful for lazy summertime naps in the vehicle.
