Great vertical ascents and views! Especially between Blackhead and Black Dome. You can cruise through these 3 peaks if you time the crowds and weather right.

This was a lovely hike on a lovely day. You get some nice views and challenging hike. Not the best around but it’s certainly a nice hike.

Black Dome and Blackhead Mountain Loop- 6mi under 5 hrs with a group of friends.

Black Dome Summit was first to see on the hike with friends. It’s the 3rd highest peak in the Catskills so the hike is an intense elevation, but so worth the view!

Black Head Mountain was gorgeous as well. Hard to compare with Black Dome since it was the second one to see on our journey

Ultimately, I thought the journey was fun, lots of climbing for the rock scramble and lots of stream crossings and mud. At this time, there is still plenty of snow and ice at the top, which makes it difficult coming down without spikes and sticks.

The trail at this time of year was pretty rugged. The hike up included wading through rocks in a steam that were incredibly slippery, and the trail was basically mud along this section. There’s a ton of rock scrambling. The first two peaks (Camel’s Hump and Thomas Cole) had no views. Once we gained elevation over 3500 feet, the trail was covered in ice and snow- microspikes were really helpful. Black dome had a small view and we continued on to Blackhead, but ultimately had to turn around due to weather. If you want a hike that has views, would approach the hike from the other side and start with Blackhead as I thought the others were disappointing.

Beautiful hike! We got go up there and the whole ridge was covered in frost and ice. We thought the hike didn't seem to be 12.8 miles long. After checking with the the NY/NJ Trail Conference Map, it seems like it's more like 6.5mi + if you start at the parking area the eastern end of Big Hollow Road and take the red trail to blackhead and then west to the parking area at the end of Barnum Road.

We hiked Blackhead and Black Dome from Lockwood Gap. This was a nice hike that was enjoyable since there was views since the leaves were off the trees. The trail up to Black Dome wasn’t bad just a little rock scramble that had great views of Blackhead over your shoulder. The trail up Blackhead seem steeper and there was ice on the trail that was easily avoided.

Great and nice hiking day with my father-in-law! We did a shorter version of the loop I guess since with the gps tracker after we passed Thomas Cole Mt and we came back, the total distance covered was 8,5miles (3,530ft total ascent). In any case great experience at the Catskills! Very recommended- pay attention to the ice in some parts of path when facing north.

We did a hike up to Thomas Cole Mountain only due to the weather situation. The hike was a nice pleasant one that took you over two other mountains before summiting Thomas Cole. If the weather was better we would’ve kept hiking the Range.

Great hike nice warmup starting from Thomas cole, made left on yellow trail to the lean to. black head 1 mile practically straight up, then .6 miles the same down . great looipop loop hike.

The lake is super nice, but there's not really any trail that we could see. Might have been overgrown, or high tide, or marshy and wet and easily missed. Either way, we walked around a bit but not the marked trail here in AllTrails. I'd suggest bringing a bathing suit and hanging out in the lake instead, or go fishing.

Wouldn't call this moderate, but fun all the same. Steep climbs, lots of loose rocks. Views on Blackhead and Black Dome. NO views on Thomas Cole. Saw a lot of bear sign.
