North entrance. Nice board walk to the woods. Great view of the wetlands which are critical to wildlife. I appreciated the benches. We saw dozens of bright orange salamanders and a tiny toad in the woods. Unfortunately the mosquitos and flies were out in full force. Having a hat helped, as did insect repellent. 2.4 miles was a short hike but I would go back late September, early October. I would probably extend my hike into Hammond State Forest. The North entrance is the first entrance on Irish Settlement rd coming from Rt 13. Just past Hammond Hill rd.

Important Note: There are two Roy H. Park Preserve parking areas on Irish Settlement. This review is for the one that starts at the South lot. They are about 3/4 of a mile apart - The North lot starts with walk across a boardwalk through a marsh, and the South lot starts with a walk through some trees and small meadows.

The South lot trail is a beautiful short trail that I would say is an Easy loop of about 1.5 miles. Mostly flat land with beautiful bird activity, especially in the mornings. There are several side branches to the loop that head over to Sixmile Creek at various points, one that heads over to an open lean-to and baby gorge, the other goes down to a swimming hole on private property. Generally they don't mind if you swim, just be respectful and don't leave trash.

A great hidden gem that is generally unused or extremely low traffic for being so close to Ithaca.

The corrected map above is now accurate. Please note that the correct route of the Spanish Loop is officially measured at 6.1 miles; the incorrect 5.5 miles shown above is the mileage for the Spanish Loop prior to the 2015 reroute, which added 0.6 miles to the route. I should mention that a good deal of the Spanish Loop Trail is on private land, not Kennedy State Forest (not Park); only 1.5 miles of the Spanish Loop (plus the FLT portion of the loop) are in Kennedy State Forest.

I am the trail sponsor responsible for maintaining this trail. In 2015, it was rerouted and the map above is now correct. However, it is now officially 6.1 miles long (the 5.5 miles shown above is the distance of the old route, prior to the 2015 reroute) and traverses areas too beautiful to merit the two-star rating given by the previous reviewer. One such area is the magnificent hemlock forest on the main FLT portion of the loop. Another is the wonderful Mercedes Springs area, which is on the newly rerouted section; it is so beautiful that the state DEC actually gave us permission to install two Adirondack chairs for those wanting to enjoy this mossy, semi-vertical main spring longer than just at a glance. Since my wife and I are the creators of this loop, I, of course, give it five stars!

This trail mapped on this page may be out of date. Following the orange trailblazers going counter-clockwise, the Spanish loop turns east off of Oswego Hill road at 42.45650,-76.21401 (about a quarter mile from the AdamsRd-OswegoHillRd junction). It joins the Finger Lake Trail after about 1.5 miles. I mean, if you want to walk on a straight road for 20 minutes, just follow this map and the gray trailblazers on Oswego Hill road. But the orange trailblazers and the FTL online map tell a different story...

We did this hike in December 20 degree weather and snow about 4-5 inches of snow. Beautiful trail. moderately trafficked not only by hikers but cross country skiers and by people snowshoeing. a very peaceful trail not too much elevation and great for begginers! loved the snowy wooden scenery. the trails are easily marked.

Hike the Spanish loop in a counter clockwise direction. You will be glad towards the end, the last 3/4 mile is downhill.

Today's weather was 90 plus degrees with high humidity. Very taxing but loved the hike.

Parking is well marked at the trailhead - roadside. You can also make this a very long end to end by using the FLT/NCT trail to Virgil Mtn. with the Foxfire lean to use for camping.

Easy but slightly confusing trail markers. Be sure you take a map or you could easily get lost.
