A great hike. First mile or two has some moderate elevation and scrambling. The shelter is a great spot to see Haverstraw, The Hudson River and the NYC skyline. it was cool to see Perkins point along the way. Never saw it from that angle. Well marked trail.

Beautiful trail with great views of the Hudson River and bear mountain bridge. Took my 3 y/o who had a blast and completed it with no problems. Bring snacks and water and definitely layer up as it gets freezing cold with the wind at the top. Views of the Manhattan skyline are visible on clear days from Perkins Memorial.

We enjoyed this little jaunt. Our dog especially enjoyed it. We took this route counter clockwise. In retrospect, we’re glad we did. The ascent posed more challenges than going down. Lots of weekend visitors summiting up the main steps but not enough to hinder our descent. Not the trip to take for bucolic solitude. But a decent workout and some great views of the river.

All of the reviews mention the advantages of hiking counter clockwise, the wayfinding challenges, and the longer than stated distance, which are all true. The hike was a lot of fun. Did it with my dog in mid Feb and it was dry and footing was generally good. Saw several other hikers out with dogs as well and none were leashed, so I’d say it was a great dog-friendly hike. Got to the trailhead at 8am (on a sat) and only a few cars, but it was packed by the time I returned.

solid hike, nice stop-offs in Doodletown to see foundation ruins and an old cemetary. some ice/snow but nothing dangerous. great views on the summit and able to see NYC through the haze.

Lovely hike. One really steep section but the rest is very manageable and kid friendly and the steep section comes about 1/3rd in.

Nice stroll on a blacktop footpath. You can also see the rescue zoo and the Bear Mountain Inn.

lots of man made stairs definitely a great way to get the heart pumping.

This was a great trail for a cold Saturday - I think the weather kept the crowds away so there were not as many people even on the staircase section. Be prepared for a small scramble on the northern side of the loop.

Nice hike. Well maintained trails, clearly labeled and great views of both the mountains to the west and the Hudson to the east. Went counterclockwise. Early portion of the trail had some traffic noise from the Parkway but that soon subsided with the ascent. Bear in mind that restroom facilities are closed for the winter. My dog loved it, although she ended up a muddy mess by hike's end. I'd love to give this hike another go in the Fall.

great shorter hike with rocky parts and pretty views of the lake. Interesting to see the trees change, all the rock formations, and the many little streams to cross made it fun for the teens and dogs. we went counterclockwise started at the stone stairs red trail to Yellow and finished on green back to the lot.

Good trail. Was not a huge fan of the man made stairs. Because of the stairs it makes it much more of a walk in the woods vs a hike. However the other half was great.

Amazing sunrise hike! Highly recommend! We did the full loop and the north side of the mountain is very rocky and currently very icy.

I recommend do the stair last on a wet day
