Walking in soft sand at the beginning was a bit challenging, but worth it once you get to the river. Keep going past the fence and try to go during a cooler part of the year since there is limited shade.

M daughter and I went out out there yesterday with her Ridgeback dog. Got there at about 11:00am, beautiful sunny day, 77 degrees. Hiked the 4.3 miles in pure beach sand. Never found the river and turned back at the blue fence. Coming back was difficult as the temp rose to over 90 degrees. Do not under estimate this walk, and keep in mind the time of year. We thought plenty of water but because of the heat and lack of shade, we went through it fast. There is NO SHADE so be prepared. Definitely wouldn’t do it again in July, and not so sure I would bring a dog!! The canyon is beautiful, really would have liked to have found the river.

Stunning hike that is moderate to (probably) hard — both for technical skills and fitness. This is the rockiest hike I’ve ever done. In come cases you’re climbing over tuff boulders, and virtually the entire length is covered with a thick layer of scree. Going down is very dicey — loose rocks combined with sharp switchbacks and cliffs. It took me longer to go down than to climb back up approx. 850’ in elevation. If my math is right, it’s about an average 15% grade.

But absolutely worth it! Take a good camera. Stop frequently and look around (because you’ll need to watch your feet while hiking). Lots of cool rocks if you’re into rockhounding. Wildflowers are already blooming. I saw one small tarantula, near river level.

There is NO shade until you get nearly to river level, where you will enter a shady utopia with multiple springs coursing across the trail (if you go right at the river trail). Go left if you want to descend the last bit to the river (though the bank is steep, so there’s no “beach”).

Great canyon, walk in creek bottom, sandy. Ends at Rio Grand R. Easy hike

This trail should be marked difficult for two main reasons. Firstly getting to the trailhead is almost impossible without a vehicle capable of passing over very rocky and rough sections of the last five miles of the road leading in. We had a Land Rover LR4 with a high clearance and good off-road capability and it was very hard going at times. Secondly the hike down the side of the canyon that leads to the river was extremely steep and very slippery due to loose rocks. Climbing back up was very strenuous and exhausting. Having said all of that, if you can deal with those issues the views were absolutely spectacular, and getting down to the Rio Grand was very rewarding.

Beautiful scenery walked to the river, but went on a day when it was in the 90s. Very hot barely any shade, it’s an easy trail but not in warm temps. Bring lots of water. Brought my dogs and kept them on a leash to be courteous to other hikers and their dogs. Bring a hat! I was sorry I forgot mine.

Canyon was neat, the rest of the trail was unnecessary.

Not a bad hike, lots of sand..was like 4 miles of beach walk. Beginning was cool in the canyon

So this trail was moderate to say the least. It was a loose rocky descent with little cairns to lead the way. There is also a variety of cactus throughout the trail to lookout for. The last part to the river is not well defined. The ascent while not lengthy was a huge elevation change and could be strenuous depending on your fitness level.
Would not travel when rainy as the last bit is through a wash. Noteworthy fact that you have a bit of Rocky offroading to reach the trail head.

However the view of the river at the end was beautiful.

Spectacular walk through canyon viewing rock walls and climbers. Then into broad open arroyo till reaching thr Rio Grande. Beautiful the entire way.

Didn't feel like a moderate difficulty but more like an easy difficulty.

Beautiful!

Saw Bear tracks. . 4 wheel drive needed to trailhead.

Incredible views, but calling this an easy trail is inaccurate. This was moderate to difficult and was straight down then straight back up. Very rocky, steep and loose gravel. You need to be fit if you want to use this trail.

My beagles and I visit the canyon at least twice a month, all seasons. Exiting the canyon, crossing the boulder fields opens to a sandy arroyo which ends at the river. Dogs run free. Take a break in the junipers. Stop, look, and explore. Four easy hours in and out.

Perfect hike for my dog and I! Super easy and flat, great to run sprints or meander along - my dog loves to swim so getting to the river was big fun! This would be a great hike to take visiting friends who aren’t big hikers or used to the elevation - I don’t mind the drive in at all, drive fast and it’s a lot of fun!

The first section of this hike is the best. I wouldn't bother going to the end unless you actually have to see the water. the rest of it is really only good for rock hunting because there isn't anywhere to sit and relax at the water unless you get in it.

This hike provides decent scenery at times of the year when you can't see as much in the mountains. The actual canyon in not very long, but you can lengthen the hike by going to the river. It's also fairly close to town and not as heavily used as trails in the mountains. However, there is no maintained trail, and that can make it a little more difficult at times. Watch out for flash flooding in the summer.

Same as the last, this trail is beautiful but extremely dry and steep, take plenty of water, make sure you are acclimated to the altitude. Not for novices or people who are not used to the climate or altitude. Would not recommend for dogs, sharp rocks and cacti all the way down.

Not a bad hike, don't see how it's rated moderate. This trail is very easy. The last seven miles of road are horribly washboards. Start filming for a movie 7-18-17 so check availability before you go.

Great views. Easy hike in most places.

This is NOT an easy trail! The views are spectacular, but take lots of water.

Had so much fun hiking this Canyon! A nice change from your average hiking trail. And the dogs loved when we reached the end and got to swim around in the river! Def will be doing this one again soon!! :)

If you don't have an SUV or jeep, don't bother. The last five miles of dirt road barely qualified as a road. Trail was nice once I got there.

This is A great trail for a hike with the kids and dogs. Hiking (walking) through a lot of silt but otherwise very easy to do. We did this hike in January and the temperature was perfect. Probably would be difficult in Midsummer. Interesting rock features to view.

Easy hike and beautiful views. The only annoyance was the massive amount of horse and dog poop on the trail. It would be nice if people would pick up after their animals...STILL a great stroll through the canyon.

Loved this pretty and varied hike to the Rio Grande. Only downside is that it's near a shooting range and the sound of echoing gunshots was a little unsettling.

Had I met the Devil while meandering through this beautiful formation of basalt, I first would have been shocked by an apparent lack of empathy and wisdom then curious enough to ask a question.
"Why would a canyon so wondrous in form be named for you, one so ugly inside and so beautiful upon the surface?"
To which the Devil would reply.
"Why shouldn't it be, humanity often accepts me in this form and calls me good."
After a moment of perplexity passes I gather my wisdom and reply, "though not I, for the beauty most compelling, I found inside the canyon while laying upon the smooth surface of truth and looking upon the complexity of its hidden face."
