This trail makes you work for the privilege of viewing the beautiful Alpine Lost Lake!

I would agree with another viewer that this trail is more than moderate.
My app showed 11.8 miles out and back and 51 floors.

Snow on the 2ft wide ledge of the sheer cliff trail made this part of the trail treacherous. Be careful and take your time, its a journey not a race

I did this hike on 5/19/18 and it was perfect. Great weather, great trail conditions (no snow or ice) just perfect. The trail is nice and wide but it’s definitely uphill and switchbacked most of the way, and the rock is loose so going down takes more time than you’d think. There were some fallen trees, some of which were fresh, so be careful. Also, the last mile to the trailhead is rough driving so a 4WD is recommended. The town of Red River is super cool and worth a stop after. The lake at the top is totally worth the effort.

So beautiful!

We hiked toward the end of April. Beautiful walk the whole way. Half the walk was on loose pack dirt but the other half was in slushy snow. Waterproof shoes were useful at this point in the season with wet snow. Gorgeous lake area still mostly frozen. A very hike short hike.

I had a blast here! Very pretty easy going Trail.. spent the night by the lake.. well worth the climb!

Great trail and beautiful views at the Lake. Did it in a lifted 4Runner. No problems at all. Very fun and rewarding trail.

Super fun trail. Lake at the top is beautiful. Hiked at the end of July and the temp was awesome. Coming back to take my dog soon.

Steep climb up, but once you're there it's breathtaking.

Beautiful! We did it in the winter and it was pretty icy. In two spots we had to cross frozen rivers. Definitely worth it though! Just be prepared and take it slow.
We did it in tennis shoes and it was fine, you just had to be careful

The trail was great but you better be good at navigating around off the trail. Towards halfway of the trail you lost site because of fallen trees everywhere. Be sure to expect delays but the end and getting to the lake is well worth it.

very beautiful, went up dec 26th and the lake was frozen!

love this trail and all the offshoots. however, it is a steep climb with ice and loose rock.

Beautiful and lots of different scenery. trail was pretty rocky and a straight up and down.

Conquered Middlefork Lake Trail again! We actually went a couple of miles out of the way but overall it was a great trip!

It was a very strenuous uphill Hike (for me who is an avid Zumba fan), with lots of switchbacks, small Creek you have to cross logs to continue on; however the lake at the top is spectacular! Well worth all the hard work to get there.

Great trail. Backpacked in with my 12 year old daughter and 4 year old golden retriever. We spent 2 nights at the lake. It is a beautiful spot.

This trail was challenging for us TX flatlanders, however, it was really fun...we took it slowly and practiced some fly fishing at the lake (no bites today, but great fun)

Awesome trail, can't add anymore than the pictures and previous review already do. BUT, some helpful info for anyone looking into this. I spent some time trying to confirm the condition of the Forest Road 58 you take to get to the trailhead prior to our departure, and never could quite get an accurate picture. My wife and I were in a 2012 Accord. We were able to make it to the trailhead, but the road was about the max that the Accord could ever handle due to ground clearance. Just an FYI for anyone looking into this trail. Highly recommend a vehicle with decent clearance for this road. Enjoy!

Definitely one of my favorite trails in Red River! Goose Lake is beautiful and peaceful, well worth the trip! It is probably the most popular trail in the area, so expect lots of traffic. Seems like every time I visit, the restroom at the lake is closed.

Disappointing if you think you're going to actually get to the lake! I did not log in to record, but after hiking 5 hours and logging 4.9 miles, the trail abruptly ended in what looked like an apocalypse of uprooted and downed trees in a boggy swamp. We hung around for at least another 45 minutes trying to figure out where the trail resumed but to no avail. We had no choice but to go back down without seeing the magnificent views of Goose Lake.
This is also not what I would call a moderate trail except at the beginning. The length and elevation gain alone make it challenging, and there are plenty of places where tree roots, downed trees and rocks make it difficult. You also have to cross the stream several times either on logs or rocks. There are no signs along the trail to guide you, and although the trail is mostly clear, at the end there is no indicator of where to go to get to the lake.
Your best bet, if you want to see the lake, is to get there by Jeep or ATV. Otherwise hike up a couple miles to the first or second meadow, have a picnic and hike down. The maps for this trail are inaccurate . If anyone has actually hiked all the way to the top and seen the lake, I'd like to know where I missed the trail.

Love this lake. It is so beautiful and well worth the time. Bring lots of water and a snack to eat by the lake.

Pretty lake at the end of the hike. It's worth hiking to a cliff overlooking the lake to get an overall view.

Nice little weekend trip. 1.5 hours up with a 40lb pack. Only 1 hour back down to truck. Lots of day hikers but we had the lake to ourselves at night. Perfect for first timers.

Not as nice as Wheeler Peak or Lost Lake, but great hike. Tons of fun

This place is beautiful and you get lost in it immediately. Been here only once but it will always be a favorite. Water in the lake is fantastic for viewing, relaxing. Or fishing

This will forever be my all time favorite camping ground. Been all over Colorado and New Mexico, and this takes the cake. I also love hiking to Wheeler from here too.

Easy trail for young and inexperienced hikers. Wide trails are easy to follow since it used to be drivable years ago. Plenty of opportunities to pick up water as long as you bring a filter!

Beautiful lake at the top!
