Beautiful trail. Started solo around 8 am and was almost immediatey greeted by the howls of coyotes around the first curve. I stopped to listen and was able to spot 3 coyotes heading up the mountain. Was hesitant to proceed because I thought they would jump me at some point lol but carefully made my way through. Lots of loose rock along the path but this trail is highly recommended and worth checking out.

HikingOver grownRocky

Other reviewers were not lying about the bushwhacking. This trail was really overgrown, snagging my flat-seamed pants, clawing at my hair and scraping my hands. Other reviewers were also correct that the All Trails map is still wrong and the Narrows is to the right at the final fork - I did that route first to confirm. The narrows aren’t all that majestic and I got a bit turned around after passing the actual narrow bit, following a false trail up and almost over a rock before seeing the real trail below. The trail also doesn’t end where All Trails says it does, but I decided not to follow it further - you wind up behind the Needles and even if it connected to another trail on that side, you’d need to put in serious miles to loop back. Instead of that, I thought I’d check out the left side of the fork on the way back, but the trail really does peter out into dirt and rocks and cacti - I got halfway to the end before my dog got a spine in her paw pad and I decided we’d seen enough. The hike back to trailhead was more scenic than the hike in, and I will say that I only encountered one other group on the actual trail and another by the trailhead, and this was a Sunday morning. There’s also shade from the mountains and some trees. If you only had one day to hike the Organs, I wouldn’t choose this route.

A slightly longer version of the Baylor Canyon Short Version. This takes you about half a mile further to the switchbacks where there are rocky points to climb and get some great views of the valley below.

My first visit out! Gorgeous surroundings! Early this morning I was met on the trail by quite a few other hikers. I was pleased to see them also implementing social distancing practices. It made for a relaxing hike. I wanted to keep going to the peak but the new boots I'm breaking in said otherwise

Tortugas is sort of an outdoor gym - there are several options for trails and multiple routes to the top, with trails ranging from a slow steady incline to steeper steady incline to rocky step up routes. it is suited to various activities, so ot is heavily trafficked with hikers, runners, walkers and mountain bikers. Scenery isn't astounding but you can see the Organ range to one side and the Las Cruces city view to the other.

very pretty hike with excellent views of the valley. pretty rock, and gets steep towards the top if you take the right hand fork. easily accessible in any car, parking is right off the main road

Interesting trail. Got long toward the end, the trail is not clearly marked in a lot of areas and we had to improvise. Would do it again.

A steady incline that is mostly exposed until near the top. Loose golf ball and softball sized rocks in spots make the path a bit hard to negotiate. Scenery at the top is beautiful, but that is pretty standard for any trail in the Organ mountains.

Like others, I missed the turn off to the right before Fillmore Canyon and had to backtrack. its worth noting that while the Alltrails map indicates to go left trail at the fork toward the "end",, it is the righthand trail that actually goes to the Narrows (about 3/4 mile past the fork). I ran across a park volunteer who clued me in to this and he was correct. The trail gets pretty slim and cuts through lot of brush and juniper, but is quite easily discernable. (I recommend long pants).

Quite steep heading up to the mine, but large rocks provide good footing.
