Fun challenging trail. All the reviews below hold true. The last portion is quite steep with loose rock, but i was able to comfortably hike it with my 6 month old son strapped to my back. As far as getting their the directions are spot on. You can park on either side of the bridge. The trail head is essentially the road closed sign across the bridge to the right going up the hill. Awesome views and rock formations at the top. We didn’t bother with the loop. When we got to the top we took a left at the fork and shortly after you get to the circle rock formation shown in the cover picture. To get to the rock formations and forgo the loop the trail out and back is only 5.5 miles

Will definitely do again.

For all those worried about the caution sign of biologics, if you are worried don't ever go swimming in a lake or river because it is worse than a natural spring. By law they have to put the caution, same as cigarettes and yet people smoke or medications and even alcohol. Dont get so wrapped up and avoid these beautiful springs due to the sign. You wont get sick by hanging out in the springs.

I enjoyed the hick. The Spring was nice and relaxing. It was clean with no trash around. When I went I sat alone for 15ish minutes before people started coming. The people were friendly and nice. It is a great place to relax. The water was warm but not hot. It was nice with chilly wind making the water definitely warmer then being out of it. Over all I had not been there since I was a child, about 25 years ago, and I loved it. I will return.

Easy trail. Used to be harder back in my high school days =D Great place for a soak!

I loved finding this hot spring during my trip to New Mexico! This trail isn’t as well known so for the most part, I enjoyed the pools alone. After a while a man came and enjoyed the spring up top. I noticed he took all clothing off. If planning a trip here please be aware that many people come here to soak up the natural minerals and often do so naked. Probably not the best for young children to see! Otherwise, a beautiful area and amazing trail!

Very nice hike. Several pools to choose from. The main pool had a couple of naked men in so my wife and I chose one of the others. It hadn’t rained in a while so we had no problem getting there in out Jeep Wrangler. I could see how the road could be bad if it had rained. We met a couple of ladies that said they took a different road the was improved all weather.

Nice trail short the springs were clean and clear. The was was as warm as a nice warm bath.

It was a beautiful run to get to the trail head but a barbwire fence has been constructed across the trail going up into the mountain. If you want to get past that obstacle bring wire cutters with you. There is no sign on the fence or any warnings. Looks like a fun trail though.

We came to a barbed wire fence with no sign on it and decided to turn around. Bummer, it was pretty fun before that.

The road up was a little rough because it had just rained that day but still manageable in our suv. Very beautiful peaceful drive. The hike wasn’t very long since the gate was open it was maybe a little over a mile. Very friendly people there, although before of some nudist. My husband and I had our 4yr Old and Our 3month Old with us So we just distracted them when other people were getting up. Overall it was an amazing experience and we will still be going back.

Road is rough to get there, but amazing.

Hike was great all the way until the loop on top of the mesa. Trail seems to have washed away and there was a fire up there so lots of trees collapsed over what might have formerly been a trail.

Highly recommend taking a left once you get up the steep rocky portion around 3.6mi. There’s a neat rock formation over there you can catch your breath and look out across the valley. If I had it to do over again, I wouldn’t have bothered with the loop around the top, though if you do poke around up there there’s a grave site to be found with candles, tobacco cans, and booze positioned around it.

The stream at the start/end of the trail was a nice chance to take a nice cool dip after the hike.

Do not attempt to drive this (when the gate is open) unless you have very high clearance! Especially if it's muddy! Just hike the 6-ish easy miles in. It took us about an hour and a half one way.
If you can't decide which hot springs in the area to do, do this one. It's actually hot, and it's beautiful. Clear water, beautiful views, less people. You won't be disappointed.

Nice down then back up trail, but despite the pleasant scenery, the springs are not worth the trip at all. Gray water and warnings of biological hazards before you leave the parking lot.

I absolutely love this place!!!!

Spence Hot Springs is a beautiful trail. I live in the area. Yeah, it is pretty sad when people trash the place treating it like some commodity provided by nature that they heard about on line. My partner and I visit when we can to clean up plastic water bottles, debris and baby diapers (child-friendly) that people seem to like abandoning there. Underneath all that is an amazing landscape apart from the hot water coming out of the hillside that people like to bathe in. Wild peppermint and arugula growing there too.

Good Hike in. Ended at the hot springs before we turned back. No trail head marker, “Private Property” vehicle gate marks the start. Talked with property owner and perfectly fine with hikers passing through. Very green, nice river the whole hike up following the trail. For us it turned to 10 Miles not 8.

Beautiful hike! Bring plenty of water and snacks. Also, trekking poles if you feel you need extra support as there is a a steep area with loose rock, but the view is so worth it!

This place is incredibly beautiful and serene but has been abused by people who leave trash behind. My daughter and I picked up 3 full trash bags worth of garbage off of this trail the other day so please keep it clean. Don't leave trash behind and if you see trash, pick it up!

The drive up to this trail was gorgeous, but there is quite a long stretch of dirt road that may take smaller cars a little longer to traverse (though it shouldn't keep you from going). This trail is a little difficult to find, but if you follow the instructions given, you should be able to find it . This trail starts off very easy and relaxing, right next to the river, but the farther you go, the harder it gets. There's a short very steep, very rocky part right at the end. Incredible views and overall great hike! It took me almost two hours to get to the top of the mesa.

10 miles round trip gate is closed, road can be accessed with bikes or 4 wheeler, downhill all the way in ... up hill back, hiking boots should be used various terrain, the warm springs are off trail, but was really nice! Take water food... long hike.

About a 10mile hike in total if the gate is closed. It’s a very easy hike with little to know elevation changes until about the last 0.5 mile. If the gate is open it’s about a 2mile hike in total. Dog friendly. Kid friendly. One of the loveliest views in New Mexico! Worth the hike!

Tried to get to the trail and both ways the map said to get here were closed. Total waste of a day.

Although on here it says that it is a camping spot, there are clearly marked signs that say it is a private property and that there is no overnight parking or camping. The beginning of the trail you walk past 4-5 signs that say no trespassing and you are walking down basically some ones driveway. Extremely Misleading information which can lead to a 5,000-10,000$ fine for trespassing and camping in non designated areas.

Pools were kinda warm and the area was really trashed. Lot of broken glass, nasty clothing, dirty diapers and even a bag of dog poo in the lower pool. Pretty gross overall...

One of my favorite places to hike. Usually when the gate is open you can drive all the way down but if not it’s about a 6 mile hike there. It’s not rough terrain so it’s very easy. The springs are beautiful as well as the canyon with the creek. Highly recommended.

The trail head all trails brought me to was definitely longer than .3 miles with a significant incline (more than 120 feet for sure). We didn’t even make it because my friend didn’t have the right shoes on and was sliding down the trail because it was so steep. We were pretty bummed we couldn’t make it.

Hiked this in January! Trail was totally ice, but we managed to find a way up! It was totally worth it. Gorgeous views. Pools were warm but not hot which was ok because with the hot sun shining down they felt perfectly refreshing with enough warmth to keep you comfortable but not overwhelming. We had the pools all to ourselves! Highly recommend!

Did the hike as driving through. Quick easy turnoff. Nice rock formations.

A long walk if the gate is locked(10 miles there and back) but the water is perfect. Stayed in long enough, we weren’t even cold when we got out(upper 30’s) All in all well worth the walk
