First half relatively easy, then elevation rise. Sandy start. Scenic views. Bring water. High elevation and heat bothersome, but trail is only 1.7 to top.

When you follow the directions here on AllTrails, it will take you through a gate onto a dirt road past some mobile homes that will be on your left up as you go up the hill. Before you get to the top of the hill, you'll see some small wooden blockades on your right and room to park. This is the start of the "trailhead". Stay on path and you'll cross a small washout and when you see a small concrete base with an old water trough on your right, the cave is just around the corner on your left. Steep climb up into the cave and slick on the way down. Based on the marks it looks like some people slide on their backsides down.

Trail is easy to follow marked with carins, posts, and some weathered ribbons from other hikers. Loved hiking along the beautiful sandstone weaving around the canyon. Be sure to hike around Church Rock to take in all its beauty. If you have time, hike onto Pyramid Rock from here. Total distance to do both is around 7.5 miles.

Great hike with beautiful views of the surrounding mountains. We marked trail! As you hike up the trail you see Church Rock in a distance. If you’re adventurous, after you descend from the top of the pyramid you can take the trail to the left and hike over to Church Rock. Be sure to hike all the way around Church Rock to enjoy the beautiful colorful sandstone. Take extra water. The sun seems so close to you in the wide open spaces. The tiny gnats didn’t keep us from having an fun day. We ended up hiking 7.5 miles and it was worth ever step.

A good intro. trail to desert/slickrock hiking. The trail is marked with cairns, ribbons in the trees and signs. There are steps cut into the rock in several places. On most of the trail, if you look carefully, you can see the next marker before losing sight of the previous one.

Different terrain than Pyramid Rock or Church Rock. Short. Geology is interesting. Pretty shabby surroundings. Interesting history.

My dog and I loved hiking this well-maintained trail with beautiful scenery. starts off with a flat, sandy area but quickly changes to beautiful mountain scenery.

great trail

Trail in great shape. Encountered 8 people (and 2 dogs) on a beautiful weekday afternoon.

Ended up being 3.5 miles for me. Well marked. Cool scenery. Mountain lion sculpture at the top. Would do again.

Very beautiful views from the top. The trail isn’t always well marked. Easy to get lost and end up on church rock trail. Would do again.

Great hike! Beautiful landscape. Go earlier in the day before the sun drops behind the canyon walls. I found the trail moderate as stated above.

Closer to 4 miles. Pull straight into the park and just stay right. Between the horse stalls and out the dirt road. Plenty of parking. 2 hour hike, 5 of us including a 3yo. Awesome views! Great first hike of spring break.

After hiking Pyramid Trail in morning, I returned to hike this in early afternoon. I had a full range of weather conditions: dark clouds, intermittent bursts of sunshine, fierce wind and bouts of blowing snow but nothing to make the trail slick. Luckily I had opportunities to get some great photos when I had those sunshine moments.

This was a good trail to try on a short visit to Gallup. There was only one other hiker out when I started at 10 a.m. as the day was a mix of clouds and intermittent sunshine along with gusty cold winds and an occasional snow shower. I was very disappointed to see that the City of Gallup had erected a large water tank, enclosed in hurricane fencing, in what was otherwise a picturesque little canyon. Also, there were no trail maps or outline posted on the trailhead bulletin board.

Hiked in early April. Very beautiful views and scenery. I’d rate it easy/moderate. It’s not very well marked. I hiked in the wrong direction several times. Church rock stays in view the whole time which I used as a guide. Also follow the cairns.

one of my favorite hikes.

Beautiful trail since you can see Church Rock and the Pyramid most of the way up and down. I didn’t make it all the way to top since needed to get back to a meeting (lunch time outing). Got to the fence gate where the elevation started to take off.

Do this every time I come here. Close to where we stay .a local trail .

March 15. The trail was muddy. Still some snow. It is beautiful.

Well worth the hike to the peak.

Awesome views and very cool hike

Very sandy but well kept trail. Very nice views.

It’s an easy trail with a few moderate inclines. The trail itself is wide and well marked with exercise stations along it. Most of the equipment worked. There were a few stations that could use some maintenance. The views are beautiful, even in the winter time. It’s a great family trail, especially if you have little ones who are new to hiking. My kids are pretty experienced hikers but they still loved this trail. Lots of room for them to run and explore.

The views were amazing! There trail is clearly marked. There were some areas that were a little steep, but there were cut out steps and was worth the climb.

Amazing hike, easy trails to follow with fabulous views... with that said i would say it is a moderate to difficult hike depending on how much of the trail that you complete. The first part of the trail is a steep ascent (1/4 mile equivalent to 10 flights of stairs per my Apple Watch), the next mile is fairly easy without a great deal of ascending. The back 1.75 miles is the most difficult section with a steep ascent. Overall it was a great hike and worth the time to complete.

Like the pyramid trail this is a beautiful trail built and maintained by the YCC. We did this trail and discovered a connecting trail to to the Pyramid Trail. The trail takes off from the left (west) side of the loop at the top of canyon and meets the Pyramid Trail about a third of a mile from the summit. Very nice.
