This Park has a small trail of about a mile named Thunder Egg Trail. We took this trail and then we went up on another to the right, not very used, that takes you to the top of the mountain, steep but not difficult to hike. At the top we walked on an area that does not have a marked trail, but it is an easy terrain to walk. From this area you can enjoy the beautiful view of the Florida Mountain. We returned by the canyon to the right from the top, sometimes we walked on the arroyo, very nice. We arrived to the Thunder Egg Trail and walked on the loop to the right until we finished at the point we started. On the trail and around the park you can enjoy the beautiful yellow poppy flowers, they say that sometimes there are a lot that the place looks as a big yellow carpet. Although we only saw a few, the visit worth it, we enjoyed a lot.
Angelica M. on Mimbres River Trail
We did an overnight hike along the Mimbres River during the Memorial Day weekend. During the first 2.5 miles, we were worried about the seemingly lack of a water source. Once we reached the sandy portion, however, we were relieved to see that the river wasn't dried up after all. Also note, the river is more of a stream and you have to cross it several times so be sure to douse your boots with water repellent before you hit this trail. If you're camping out at the fork, be aware that this is a wilderness home to bears, mountain lions and bobcats. The only wildlife we encountered were a group of incredibly noisy turkeys in the middle of the night. Overall, this was a nice little trip.
