Awesome. There was a few unexpected "treats" found along the trail. I will definitely do this one again. like someone else commented about this area, it is a little noisy, even way up there. It would bee nicer to get away from it all, but this has it's positives

Short but interesting. It's fun to get out on the lava and get an up-close look at it. The rock cairns are closely spaced and easy to follow. Don't bring dogs, and wear a shoe with a hard sole.

Challenging but worth it. The trail climbs quite steeply, so plan on a little extra hiking time. This is a rockhounds paradise, though. When the sun is high overhead, the trail glitters with quartz. Also, near the halfway point, there is a perfect flat rock ideal for sunbathing.

One of my favorites- this trail has phenomenal views over the lava flows. I've never found it hard to follow, except the time I hiked it by moonlight (too many shadows!) There's many many vista points, and many places to stop for rest in the shade, so it's a good idea to plan extra time for this hike. It's too special to rush.

Rather boring trek across the desert for the first couple miles, but worth it if you stick it out. There's no shade, which makes this a bad hike for the summer months, but the lack of trees means there are views in every direction as you climb the hill. The trail does pass under I25 through a low tunnel- some people may find this uncomfortable.

Another nice trail that’s well marked and has several sites that were mines in the past. You can connect with several others trails in the State Park for more Vatican’s greater distances.

Trail is well marked and has some nice views of the Sandia’s, but it just isn’t that interesting or challenging.

This was a great trail to get started on. There were a couple areas that were more technical, but there are easier paths to bypass those areas. Some areas have deep ruts, and it was rather muddy as well. Ran this trail in my 2019 Toyota 4Runner Offroad with 275/70r17 BFGoodrich K02 with no issues. I will be coming back to this local trail often.

Good local trail with some nice views up the gullies. This trail has plenty of loose rocks so be careful if you are trail running, but the trail does keep you interested.

Great hike. It was about 30 degrees when we started. Small stream starts your hike for about a mile as you pass through the forest. Clean path and well maintained. Lots of deer since we were the first ones on the trail. There are 2 Y’s. We chose left on both and it took us 5.1 miles to complete the trail. I believe going right would have been easier and shorter.

I recommend this trail. First bit is easy just a gradual incline. The second half is up, lots of up and the last 1000 feet is dangerous. Be careful, use your map on the way up and even more on the way down. It's very easy to get off course towards the top when you are returning down.

Snow and ice on some of the other trails in the area but the back side of the hill was dry and easy to walk. Lovely vistas.

This place is amazing. I love the beauty and history. I couldn't go as far as I'd like as they are doing some trail construction. It would be great if they finished the full 3 miles of pipeline for trail. They have some very informative plaques at the beginning of the trail but they could use some serious attention as they're slowly deteriorating. I will be back!!

Snowshoed all the way to Nambe Lake. Great fun! Most of the trail is packed hard and easy to snowshoe on. Last ~ 1/2 mile is not - no one had been to the lake it seemed for a few weeks. Some big drifts that are difficult to get your spikes into, especially with this part of the trail being on the steeper side. I blazed a path through the snow so it should be a bit easier for others, at times building steps in the snow so I could move up and forward. Not insanely hard, but definitely strenuous. You will pothole alot, so be careful. Bring lots of calories and water! Also, it’s much colder at the lake than a few hundred feet below it. Bring a puffy jacket. I’m in good shape and round-trip was 4 hrs because of the last half mile and strenuous nature of the last full mile. Enjoy! :)
