Very beautiful. I suggest going on a weekday and when school is in session. We went during the summer on a Saturday afternoon and it was pretty busy. But very beautiful scenery! The waterfall was awesome. We climbed to the top of the waterfall and the springs are at the top that is feeding the waterfall. The water is clear and clean. Tastes so fresh! Water is ice cold though. It was about 95 outside and the water felt about 40. Overall it was awesome. *** you do have to pay to get in the state park. $5 or $10 for a bus.

Loved this waterfall. Hike to the overlook to explore the basin and pools that form under the waterfall. The water was cool but the rocks were slippery. If you're going to get in be careful! Or bring watersocks. We hiked to the top of the waterfall, too. So worth it! Beautiful view.

Great gem in the middle of nowhere. Accessible to all and worth the drive!

Great trails. Friendly service. Had a great time

Great trail. Takes a lot of agility with all the rocks. A lot of steady uphills that will work you pretty good. Beware it’s over 4.7 miles. I think I ended around 6 miles total.

Easy to follow for the most part. Also able to knock it out in less than 2 hrs. I recommend early morning or afternoon

It was a great little trip... only complaint was no sign at the turn off of the main road... the trail leading to the waterfall is easy for those who have a disability or in a wheelchair....

Pretty awesome trail, did not expect to find something like this in the Carlsbad area. I did some trail running but as a mountain biker, I'd say this would be a pretty good mtb trail with several technical sections. Trail is actually much longer than what's listed. I ran 6.5 and actually probably cut off a couple more miles. There is a pretty long loop to the south of what the map shows. It's in lower, flatter country but still pretty enjoyable. Would be more appropriate for beginner mountain bikers, runners, etc. There don't seem to be many bailout options down there though. Would like to try to find some way to upload my loop...

Been in both Summer and wintertime gorgeous both times. Easy. Kids can do it. Good for an afternoon of quick activity.

Such an oasis surrounded by desert. Great sport climbing as well!

The falls trail was good (68) but an attempt to hike the connecting trails left me frustrated. They are not well marked and overgrown. The small hiker plates that are on the trees are so far apart and hard to see. I found myself getting lost off the trail. Not recommended for someone new to that terrain. Stay to the falls trail

Great for trail runs. There is a whole system of trails in the area that make for many different distances. As of 5-16-17 it appeared that trails had new carsonites (markers) placed on them. Would give 5 stars if not for the oil production as well as dirt bags that use the entrance of the designated recreation area as a dumping ground.

First of all there are pictures and reviews on here are not la cueva, looks like somewhere around Guadalupe peak or McKittrick canyon. That being said, these trails are great for biking/hiking for being so close to town and are always well maintained other that the signs probably need to be replaced but anyone using any type of app like this can easily pull up their location and figure out where they are seeing as you have cell phone service the whole time(or anywhere I've been on it)

Where is the running water? Never seen it... what about that picture inside the limestone cave? How do i get there?

I want to point out a couple of things to future hikers. First of all, the access road is an extremely rough, unpaved road suited only for SUV'S and 4 x4 pick up trucks which I didn't have. Secondly, the trailhead is poorly marked and not even identified by name. Thirdly, the trail goes right through cattle grazing land. How,do I know there isn't a mad bull among them ready to charge at me with no barbed wire fence separating us? I didn't get far enough on the trail to see anything scenic, so I was not impressed with the location.

Beautiful falls

Tuesday, March 29, 2016

There are two trails. One is short, paved, and leads to the waterfall, which is beautiful. The Sitting Bull trailhead is on the other side of the parking lot near the map. That is an uphill, rocky hike which would have been great if it weren't for the "closed for public use" sign a short way up. It was still a nice hike and the views from up on the hill were breathtaking.

We LOVED this trail.

This was a great trail! I would definitely come back. There is beautiful (small) cave with teal water not too far from the trail entrance which was very beautiful. There are many small springs and a nice waterfall. The limestone which is all around is equally beautiful. We hiked for 3.5 hours. Our dog also loved it! It was a great adventure!

The walk to the falls is pretty uneventful, but the falls themselves are really fun. There are various pools that cascade down level by level. I have only ever gone here to swim so I can't comment much on the hiking. There is a trail going up to & behind the falls, into a cave system where King Solomons Mines was filmed. Last time I went the water was too high & frigid to explore. This was over 10 yrs ago so I plan on going again soon to see how much has changed.

Beautiful waterfalls and great pools to swim in! The water is perfect during the hot summer months!

closed as of last year due to flooding. The road is blocked off. So be sure it is reopened before making the trip!

The wife and I enjoyed an early May hike in Last Chance. Seventy degrees and light breeze. Easy trail for old fokes. We did not make it to the springs but at our turn around point we looked back and up to see the elephant. (see pictures)

An oasis in the desert! The drive from Carlsbad is rather lengthy, but the hike from the parking lot is very short.

Tuesday, October 30, 2012

The basic trail to the waterfalls basin is very easy and breath taking. The hike to the top of the falls is steep but worth the view.

Great place to visit. The trail over the falls is open now. You can see the damage from the fires; very sad.
