Tough ascent, but enjoyable. The way back down through the canyon along the creek is incredibly dangerous at this time of year due to icy conditions. Definitely not for beginners. I’m going to try this again when it’s closer to summer because it’s the ice that lowered my rating.

Entire trail was sandy! Trail weaves in and out and branches off of itself so it is sometimes a bit tricky to know which way to go! Otherwise petroglyph viewing was amazing! More petroglyphs than other trails in the monument and much less crowded!

Easy trail, especially if you just got to the area and are adjusting to the altitude. It took me awhile to really figure out what a petroglyph was and exactly what I was looking at. The biggest concentration of petroglyphs is on the back wall of the canyon. Neat to see this part of history. Bring water and there is no shade.

There were some steep parts on the latter third of the trail. I wasn’t wearing the most comfortable shoes that day for hiking, but otherwise pretty moderate hike with clearly marked trail. Nice views.

Lots of short loop options, both on and off road, great for kids and bicycle and wheelchair accessible. Great winter hike-Hope to see more of it next time.

Awesome area for hiking, Trail running, mountain biking and bouldering. There is no shade in this area. Go early to beat the heat. Must bring water. There’s no water sources there.

Great trail, fairly easy, went on a Saturday at noon and only encountered 3/4 other people. Near the ascent to the ridge there are a few spots that you’ll need to climb. At the crest though there are still some patches that are deep snow, ice, and mud. Really wonderful in the winter, but I imagine doing this in the middle of the day in the summer would be brutal because there is not much shade.

February 15th. I started with Hawkwatch (anticlockwise) which is a steep hike up on the mountain. You will need maps to help you find the trail sometimes but common sense would help you as well. There was snow up to the knee at some stages especially on Hawkwatch, south crest trail and the peak. As usual, it was very windy on the peak so take something to protect your face. I only used poles; did not need spikes since the snow was fluffy and fresh. The views from the peak are fantastic and overall this hike is a good exercise. I only met 3 people in ~6 hours so both I and my dog enjoyed how peaceful it was.
