Good trail, lots of options of where to go. I enjoyed getting up in elevation as you had shade and trees.

Fun, short hike. A couple of short sections are somewhat difficult, but great views of the foothills, South Sandia Peak, and the city. Quite easy to get off trail due to number of trail intersections. Kind of made our own loop on way back.
Lots of pretty wild flowers after recent rains.

easy and good trail for even first day

This hike is quite strenuous at the beginning because the first 2.5 miles are climbing through mostly desert and rocky areas. It doesn’t start to vary until you enter the forest. There are intermittent views at the beginning and the top but that’s not really what this hike is for. There are better views, the hike itself is lovely. Be careful if you hike in summer like I just did. I had 2 liters for 5 hours and it was just enough. The last 3 miles back to the car in 100 degree weather is brutal so be mindful of that. Use lots of sunscreen and bring extra water.

Highly disappointed. Walking trail we picked went along backyards. Little shade, and good luck finding a map and dust in-between my toes.

Great boost for beginners. Good incline changes, uphill and downhill terrain. Easy to navigate. Bring water if you are hiking in the sun like I did. Got my heart rate up and had a great time. Beautiful views of the city.

Very nice walk!

Lovely views. No shade so go when it’s cool. Nice trail for dogs.

Fun, easy trail. The view of the Sandias and the valley below them is very nice.

great easy trail

Overall a nice easy trail if you're looking for something short. Zero shade, so go early or in cooler seasons/weather. I hit the trail about 10 after my morning run so it was already getting a bit hot even though it was a slightly cloudy day.

Lots of bike traffic so be mindful & remember your trail etiquette! Signs may say for bikers to yield but reality is that it's a lot easier for a hiker to stop than a cyclist. Give them some space & take the time to snap some photos or just enjoy the view.

Trail is very smooth throughout but there are a lot of intersecting trails so pay attention and/or watch your map! Beautiful views of the mountains and the city!

Some parts are difficult, overall excellent!

Really enjoyable hike. Views along the ridge to the south peak were fantastic. The rocky stretch at the start is very hot with very little cover from the sun. If you're returning in the heat of the day, be prepared.

Pretty, sweeping vistas. No petroglyphs. Wouldn't bike this trail again without a much fatter tire, given the rocks and sand.

A chill loop, nice to do around sunset. Lots of mountain bikers so watch out!

A beautiful and challenging hike. And a great workout with beautiful views. Also lots of critters to enjoy. Saw a red tailed hawk perched on a tree right beside the trail. Saw the most gorgeous horny road I’ve ever seen as well as a gopher snake. All in the same day! Overall a beautiful day on a beautiful mountain.

This was a great little family hike. The view is beautiful and there was hardly anyone on the trail. 2 volcanoes are closed for restoration, but the hike is still beautiful and a great time and 1 volcano is still open.

Nice little hike. Always a few tourists. Great for a quick morning hike. This time of year, the desert is in bloom.

Pleasant and easy hike. The tops of JA and Vulcan Volcanoes are closed for ecological restoration. You can go to the top of Black Volcano though.

Easy trail to navigate. Some inclined to get your heart beating but not too bad at all. This place is great for views! Beautiful area and the trail was pretty quiet. A lot of areas are closed off but those are mostly secondary trails so it doesn’t ruin the hike.

This was an awesome, gentle afternoon hike—if you’re into the geology aspect, it’s super cool! The views of the sandias are incredible too.

It’s a great trail for taking a dog as it’s more of walking not much hiking. Other then that it’s a great.

Good one to run..a little boring to walk.

Beautiful scenery in the forest canyon and breathtaking views the at the top. Not an easy hike but well worth the trek. I will say there is something a little creepy about the rock caves here and there. Combine that with the cougar prints and bear activity and it gave me the heebies while hiking alone as the sun set.

Tough trail, lots of boulders but with nice breaks of relatively level sand. Lightly trafficked so you’re not passing or yielding to other hikers all the time

Nice easy hike. If you want to avoid the bikers I recommend taking the side trails. Very pleasant overall.
