Awesome hike, 4.4 miles round trip. No bugs did this hike in September not sure if that’s why. my dog had a great time.

This was a tough trail—not because any of the hiking itself is particularly difficult but because it’s an ~8 mile climb uphill the whole way. We parked at the lower tram and hiked over on the Tramway Trail to La Luz, which probably added a mile or two to our total hike, but it meant we were right at our car when we took the tram back down. We weren’t super prepared (both in tennis shoes and with not quite enough water—make sure you bring at least a liter per person), but we made it nonetheless. The 2-3 miles from the end were the toughest for me, but I’m overall glad we did it. Not sure I’d do it again without being in slightly better shape, though. It took us 5 hours from the lower tram parking lot to the upper tram. I recommend starting early, as we had more shade that way in the beginning, although parts of the upper trail are also quite shady. We brought jackets but didn’t wind up needing them.

Great uphill climb. Went early as there's no shade. bring lots of water!

Absolutely loved it. The trail was easy to follow, got there early so it wasn't too hot. The views are breathtaking, and very much worth the work to get up the trail.

Great weather but still bring water. views galore

Enjoyed the trail. Make sure to get there early to beat the heat & to find parking. The lot was full when I got there at 9am. I parked back down the hill. I was expecting an easy hike. It wasn't technical, but steep. I wasn't prepared to say the least. Some good shade but areas of direct sunlight, heated up pretty quick. Overall a great in & out trail. Definitely do it again!

Great short trail has many add on trails so just check route. Definitely a great biking trail if you choose that.

Great trail saw three snakes on the trail one was little scary, but it’s that time of year cold night with warm days. I understand there just sun bathing, but still watch out for them. Other than that it’s fun trail.

GPS tracked 7.5 miles in just a little over 3 hours. 23 min mile avg. took tram down and lucked out with a ride back to parking lot from Forest rangers. definitely recommend. tram was $15.

First time up la Luz and it was well worth it! Think the pino trail was a little more difficult, but all in all this was a great hike! Wear comfy socks and shoes if you plan on going all the way up/down, the rock slide portion of the hike takes a toll on your feet!

it was my first hike in this area. the first mile or so was great, but I lost the trail down in a creek bed. it also seemed like nature designed the plant layout to be as painful as possible, placing cactus right were someone would be likely to lose his footing. overall though, great views, lots of options for connection trails. I'd recommend it.

Very nice trail that offers a steady uphill hike once you very about a half mile in. Be sure to go a bit past the top of the Piedra Lisa North trail and scramble up to sit a while on the rock outcropping there, which offers a lovely 360 view.

This hike is now going to be one of my favorite hikes! So much fun, me and my 10 year old had a blast. Found a couple extra paintings that made it really fun. enjoy!

I love La Luz trail! Today was my fourth time hiking it (once down and three times up)! It’s challenging enough that after a half day of hiking you get the distinct feeling you have accomplished something. There are many awe inspiring views along the way, challenging rocky areas that beat up your feet, and shaded cutbacks that offer a reprieve from the strenuous effort. I do this hike once each year that I’m in NM. Ten 3, the new restaurant at the top offers decent food and a full bar!

I would only recommend going off-trail like this if you have a good sense of direction and a friend. Do not go alone because some spots can be kind of sketchy, and there is some light climbing involved in going the way we did. Pathfinding is also easier with two people talking and looking. Lots of wild life sign and game trails, so be attentive and project your pressence with noise. We went late afternoon but there is plenty of shade in the forest. We made double sure to be back on trail before dark. Lots of fun!
