Pleasant hike, dog friendly, mild incline and right outside nyc. Would definitely go again

Great for a nice short hike. Nothing special to see, but there are a few overlooks and its a lot of fun on the rocky parts. Make sure to keep an eye on the trail markers.

I really liked this trail. Going up and down the hills was a workout, but the the landscape was beautiful. There were many good view points, some castle ruins, and a far away view of the NYC skyline that kept this trail interesting.

You could hear the highway pretty much the whole time and the views were ok but kind of blocked by the trees. The beginning/end part by the river was really nice though, and it’s good for seeing animals. I saw a hawk catch a squirrel, which was both terrifying and super cool! I might do it again but it wasn’t my favorite hike in the area.

Hiked in September 2018. The description of the hike doesn’t match the mapped area and trail markers. So we followed the map downloaded from AllTrails and it worked great. I’d say it’s more easy than moderate. There are some nice viewpoints - Castle ruins, a water tower, nice lake, few streams with some waterfalls.
There are 2 parking areas, the one with directions from AllTrails has 2 portapotties. No ranger station, only trailhead with a map posted. Trails are clearly marked. We didn’t get lost as were following the app’s map.
A lot of people with dogs at the beginning of the hike. You can combine trails for various difficulties. Parking is tight but people come in and out all the time, as there are a lot of locals who just come to walk with dogs around the lake.

Very nice little hike . Up to the castle was a little challenging for beginners

1.5 mile hike to Matapan Rock with spectacular views to Northwest then returned back to parking lot to pick up Cannonball and then white to Castle point lookout for a halfway decent view. Dislike Cannonball trail due to so many switchbacks because of the mountain bike use and usually try to cut through most of them.

Pretty and not boring with different terrains

easy hike, nicer part is first half mile.

Perfect trail with nice views.
Have an option to combine or switch between trails.

the ruins of Foxcroft Mansion make this worth it!

Pretty hike!

Definitely NOT an easy trail.PLEASE update to moderate. I followed the directions of the description cause the map was all OVER the place! Finding the trail head was difficult cause it's overgrown. Follow the white trail to yellow to find the falls. I took the whole family and we enjoyed it. Tired, sore, and dirty! Also not sure where the old buildings and wildflowers were but they weren't on this trail.

Once you hit overlook trail after McAvoy pay special attention. Some trail markers are difficult to see at times but the orange ribbons on the trail make up for it. You may think its a temporary blaze but its not. Follow the ground as well and you will be fine. Trail looks like it hasn't been maintained to much or traveled that much as well. Pay attention. Good hike however with decent view points over the lake but the view over I 287 you may not find unless you walk off a cliff. Again, pay attention.

Loved the variety of terrain, a lake, castle ruins, views of Wanaque Reservoir and Appalachian foothills from high up near the water tower. This map will help you find your way: NYNJTC_NJParkMaps-RamapoMtn_2015-85x11.pdf

Semi hard trail, parking sucks so make sure you get there early overall a good hike but i wouldn’t consider it hard. Also sometimes the trails are not well marked so pay attention

Rattle snake warning!!! Be cautious! About 7ft long bringing of trail. This is a very hard hike lots of rocks and you have to pay attention to markings or you will get lost.

Difficult ascensions towards the end but with rewarding, Panoramic views of NYC and Ramapo Lake. Some trail markers are difficult to locate but the map on this app helped a lot.

Great hike. Many positives. Lots of blueberry bushes along the hike. Very rocky, lots of boulders to climb over. Not many scenic views on the red path, but it gets better on the red/yellow path. Trails are marked well, and there were plenty of other trails to try. Ample parking.

beautiful, but the trail markings need work.

pretty good views. nice stream, good lake. the trails should be better marked, we ended up cutting off a third of the hike before we realized it.

Hiked this trail on a Wednesday afternoon. This trail is combination of blue, yellow, white, and red trails. Some parts of the trail are not marked well. Overall it was a decent hike. Lots of flies and frogs. Nice elevation, gets your heart pumping. AllTrails map helped me to find my trail when I didn’t see any trail marks.

Hiked here around 9a on Sunday Father’s day and medium sized lot almost filled to capacity. Took the Oakland exit off Route 287 north and entrance was on left about 1/2 mile after exiting.

Hike is primarily under shade of the woods and sometimes buggy. We did the blue trail to white with Van Slyke castle as our goal. True as others stated beginning of hike immediately takes you upwards and some scrambling and bouldering involved but moderate hike for most part. We took the labs and they were fine on leash.

Castle ruins were so neat to discover and the views towards NYC was breath taking. Ruins were approx 1.75 miles from lot so easily done. We packed lunch and ate when we reached the water tower that was another 1/4 mile beyond castle.

Def recommend. What a little gem.

Caution: poison ivy strewn around ruins.

Nice place with good decent elevations. Not good trail marks. Easy to get lost. Have offline maps

This is my favorite trail in the area. Well marked and great views. I love the beginning of the trail along the stream.

Lovely walk for all ages. Easy trails and pretty water. Wear bug spray and remember there are no bathrooms anywhere!

A nice hike around the lake.

This is a combo loop made from 4 trails Hoeferlin (yellow), Macevoy (blue), Castle Point (white), and Skyline Connector (red/white)
We did this hike with 4 kids ranging from 2-6. This was not an easy hike, even if you are not with kids, there were some challenging points.
Start at the North Parking Lot. Head down the main path till it forks and veer left. Start following the yellow markers. There is one point midway it got confusing, there were yellow markers heading in 2 directions, take the markers going down. Follow the yellow trail till it meets the main path. Head on the main path till you hit the lake and turn right. Start following the blue markers.
Part way down you will see a stream coming out of the forest. We took a break here and cooled. We climbed the rocks up and followed the stream into the forest a bit, then headed back to the main path. Keep following the blue markers until you hit a fork. Take the road to the right with the 2 cement pillars. About 100 ft up is the white trail head. This part is uphill but it is not very long. About 10-15 minutes. At the end of the uphill will be the castle ruins. This is a cool spot to take some pics and hand out in the shade. Once your read to head down, on the other side of the ruins is a wide clear path, follow it down to the main path. Continue on the main path , but we on the look out for the white markers. You will pass a private house and a little after that the white markers are on your left. Follow the white markers all the way to the end. You will meet the main path again. Take a right and about 50-100 ft down veer left onto Skyline Connector (red/white) Follow that all the way back to the car.
Great Hike. Would definitely do it again
