Hiking

We hiked Mt. Garfield back in mid-October and it was one of the most beautiful hikes I've done. It wasn’t too crowded like some others in the White Mountains and there were a few streams along the way. The foliage was beautiful and the view at the summit was breathtaking (lucked out and got a clear day). While this hike isn’t the most technically challenging, it is LONG, so probably not ideal for beginners. Wear a good pair of waterproof hiking boots. Our feet were sore after this one! Most of the trail is a flat, steady incline. At the very end (<.5 miles to summit) there is a more steep, rocky incline (you may need to use your hands a bit/scramble). I definitely recommend this hike but, again, it is long so pack and plan accordingly!

Completed 11/22. This trail is closer to 12 miles and not 10.9 (4.6 to the hut, 0.5 to Galehead and 0.8 to South Twin - multiplied by 2 = 11.8). Crampons are highly recommended for trail up/down South Twin. Definitely great 360 degree views from South Twin.

This is a top 10 hike- great views on a clear day. Definitely bring spikes for the last .2 to the top. They would come in handy for other parts but you can sneak off to side as needed.

Zealand Rd was open! Hike 11/21/20 Short and sweet hike. After so many long ones, this seemed like a tease. But a good one to test out winter and get more comfortable with cold weather hiking for this newbie. Parking lot was filled at 10:20am on Sat. Parked on the road. The climb was pretty consistent all the way up (up up.) Through the woods, along a stream for the first part. No tricky stream crossings. At the last third we put on our spikes as the icy was pretty slippery and more unavoidable. As most have said, the summit offered no views, just an open space with a pile of rocks. There was a glimpse of a view right before the summit. It was a gorgeous day, so a bummer to miss out on views. But the benefit was not having wind exposure. This probably wasn’t one I’d do again, but was still a fun 2 hours and 51 minutes! Lots of dogs which made me bummed I didn’t bring mine.

Amazing views up top and not a difficult hike up. Definitely needed micro spikes the last mile or so. Very windy and cold up top.

Switched to micro spikes around 3.5 miles. Nice and warm down below but really windy up top. Stopped at Garfield Pond on the way down. Think I have a pic of a moose track in the snow.

Great first winter hike! After the second river crossing there’s a solid amount of ice underneath the 2-4 inches of snow, making spikes and poles a must! Both river crosses have stable rocks to go across, but ice is starting on there. With the warm weather this weekend, anticipate this being very wet and icy!

HikingGreat!

Yoho blow the man down windy on top. Only stayed a few minutes to take photos. Micro Spikes came in handy the last mile or so. Great hike up most of the 3000 feet of elevation was fairly gradual. Only our 2nd 4000 footer so a few more to go. Took us 6 hours and we were pretty knackered by the time we got back to the car. I am 68 and my wife is 64 so we better get busy on the rest

The trail was well marked and had a nice gradual incline. Trail had switchbacks which were great! The last .2 miles were a little slippery. Once you get to the summit... you’ll be glad you came. So breathtaking. Love Garfield!

Hiking

Easy hike with icy spots half way up the mountain. Traction is helpful. Overcast but ok because not much of a view at the top.

Awesome trail! Just over six hours total for two novice hikers. Had the peak to ourselves. A little muddy on the way down.

Hiking

First 1-2 miles, relatively flat (slight uphill), some mud after mile 3, no snow or ice (the last day of the warm November weather we've been having). The last 0.2 is steeper with some scrambles.
