beautiful! its steep until you almost get to the lake, then it levels out. great hike for kids and the inexperienced, just take plenty of breaks. the hut at the top has bathrooms

I parked up by the train station and brought my bike. I rode 3.5 miles downhill to the Ripley Falls, where I had dropped off my friend. I chained my bike there. We went in where the Appalachian trail crosses the road. The cliff has multiple areas with has some great views. Even saw the train pass down in the notch. The section down from Mt. Jackson is not as easy as described. We ended up helping some people that were fooled by the moderate rating and had a hard time getting down. The rocky trail is what made it more difficult for some. For avid hikers, it’s not difficult, but there are easier trails listed as moderate.

Great hike! Elevation gain on my gps said 1,846. A bit more than what AllTrails had. My 11 yo loved this hike and we all had fun! Very heavily trafficked. Recommend and early arrival to get a parking spot.

Hiked this down from Lonesome Lake Hut as we had parked at the Basin. I really enjoyed the technical rocky course. Do keep a look out for signage as it passed over water a few times. Great views of waterfalls and wildlife.

Hiked up with my parents who are inexperienced hikers. One used trecking poles. This was my second time doing this hike and I really enjoy the views at the top.

Beautiful trail. The lake and trail that loops it are worth the climb. Be sure to check out Lonesome Lake Hut! There are bathrooms there and places to change if you want to swim!

This is a really nice hike in Franconia. Although the incline is steep at parts, it levels off shortly after. Definitely less strenuous than the trails up the ridge across the highway.

At the lake is a lovely dock that gives views to Franconia Ridge and Cannon. This is a great place to stop for lunch. Curious and friendly resident ducks on the lake may come up to you, but don’t feed them! They are fun to watch though.

It can get a bit muddy around the lake, but bog bridges help mitigate that.

I took the Dodge Cutoff Trail back down. It was less developed than the LL trail up. No staircases on Dodge. Less people though. I’d recommend going back down the way you came though.

Really nice hike, a good way to pass a few hours.

A favorite for the last 8 years, always other dogs for our dog to greet, unfriendly dogs are usually on leash but have had a few people with their dogs out of sight/not paying attention to them. Beautiful year round and a great spot for a mid-walk swim in the summer. If you go in the spring - wear rubber boots because it will get muddy.

Tough uphill, a little muddy at the top. Nice views.

Great trail for beginners. We are experienced hikers but were taking friends for their first hike. This trail has beautiful views of waterfalls for the entire trip up. We ended up doing a loop rather than the up and back. It was a bit muddy and the cascade bridge has washed out but you can still cross with minimal problem. We also had a small dog and he had fun. The early parts of the trail especially the swimming and wading areas of the lower falls were extremely crowded but about a mile into the trail there were very few. This would be a good beginner trail for people who want to start running trails or training with heavy packs too. Definitely recommend for newbies.

We did this with our two children age 3.5 and 5.5 y and it was a big success. The young one was in my back for the first half and then he wanted to climb on his own. It was a lot of fun. I recommend this trail for any family with minimum experience. Hiking boots are a plus since some sections are somewhat rocky.

This trail is great if you want to get in to the Whites but not be above the tree line. It stays low with very little elevation gain. We went after a storm had rolled through the day before and some parts of the trail resembled a creek more than a path, but it wasn't impassable and the mud never became deep.
The only real caution I have is that the bridge is washed out. It's easy to cross because the water isn't fast, but you do have to take off your shoes to get through it.

Awesome begginer hike to get you fitted for more bigger hikes. Trail gets steep for a ways. Beautiful lake and hut. Recommend doing the full trail around the lake. Great views!

Steep climb most of the way up with many roots/rocks. Went with our kids and they made it but it was tough. Overall a great workout and many people were getting winded making it to the top. View of lonesome lake was nice with a surprisingly strong breeze to cool us off.

Beautiful, easy, exceeded my expectations. I'll bring friends and family here again and again.

Even though the uphill climb was a bit rocky it was well worth the lake views at the top!

love. short but tough hike with an exceptional reward waiting for you at the top. Seeing the water sparkling through the forest was a joyful sight and swimming in the soft water felt luxurious. The walk around the lake was dense and a bit muddy but gorgeous views all around.
my dog enjoyed it too.

Lovely, easy walk. Had 3 kids under 7 and 1 infant in a carrier and the trail was easy to navigate, well groomed. The swimming hole was way better than anticipated. It’s a full beach with lifeguards and nice shallow swimming in the roped off area. Expected to take a quick dip but instead spent the afternoon. Wish we’d brought a grill to stay through our next meal like many other families. Only thing we wish we’d known is that their is a cost: $4 for adults and $2 for kids over 6. Well worth the visit!

I was wondering why this trail was kicking my butt and then realized I gained 1000ft in half an hour! Once you get past that it’s easy, and the view is amazing.

I've done this trial many times throughout the years hiking in the White Mountain. This trail is great for young family and is very rewarding especially when you bring picnic food to enjoy a picnic by any one of the scenic spot at Cascade Brook.

The brook doesn't get very deep but in some spot deep enough that you can wade in to soak in the cool and refreshing mountain stream. My family and I had many memorable hike through it. It does get a big buggy so make sure you bring plenty of insect repellent.

Excellent example of water wear formations in the basin. Very nice hike

Beautiful trail and a much more interesting route to Lonesome Lake hut than the Lonesome Lake trail. (We did a loop using Lonesome Lake trail to the hut from Lafayette campground, returning by basin cascades and pemi) River crossings were fine (just jumping from rock to rock) and the bridge being out was not an issue. Definitely worth doing!

Long steady climb but i've seen worse in the area. I would rate it moderate and worth every step. The panoramic view of Lafayette,Lincoln and Haystack was spectacular. Great for pics. The walk around the lake was so peaceful and serene. Love love loved it!

A lot easier than expected with a moderate rating. A lot of the path was paved and not difficult at all.

Beautiful finish. Lots of roots! Be careful.

Great hike with kids ages
5,6 and 9

I loved this hike short on miles but don’t let that fool you it definitely packs a punch with its steep elevation. If was super fun, the lake is beautiful and don’t forget to pack something to swim in believe me it’s so beautiful you’ll definitely want to. Also the Hut is amazing 

The Cascade Brook was a great trail! The view from the lake was spectacular!! I’d have preferred to have hiked the Basin Trail up or down and used the Cascade Brook to make it a loop (instead of Cascade to Lonesome Lake). The Pemi Trail to and from the Basin Parking Lot wasn’t as well maintained, which was fine, but it was close to the interstate so that made for a less enjoyable section of the hike. Overall, great views with lots of swimming holes plus plus an AMC hit at the lake.
