From our campsite in Water Canyon the trail heads off to the overlook. Easy hike with a reward at the end with the vast view of the Winnemucca Valley.

After experiencing the closed off mine shaft trail, I can say that the views are great. The trail itself is well maintained and easy to hike on. Though, If you'd like to get an amazing view of the nearby town and surrounding area, I would recommend climbing the rest of the mountain when you get to the end of the trail; you'll get an amazing view while doing so.

This is a nice and easy trail with little elevation gain. Perfect for kids! For the short mileage, you are rewarded with great views of the Winnemucca Valley. You can see the South Jackson Range, Winnemucca mountain, and the Santa Rosa Range from here. This is also an awesome spot to sit and watch the sunset. There are two benches at the end, along with an information sign about Water Canyon.

Thanks BLM! What a unique treasure. I actually had to return at sunrise, after visiting at sunset.

You will need a high clearance vehicle to access this trailhead, possibly a 4WD vehicle in early spring when the creeks are flowing high. You will turn at the rest stop and continue going through the cattle guard. Veer right at the first crossing, then left at the second crossing where the road will get rougher. We parked a few hundred feet before the trail starts. Like other trails in this wilderness, there doesn't seem to be any maintenance. Some parts are washed out or overgrown, so we had downloaded the topo map to keep on trail. You see cool rock formations on this short hike though! There some phyllite and I think sandstone. The trail eventually ends ~2.5 miles in where you have excellent views of Santa Rosa peak. From what I've read from peakbaggers, this is the shortest route to summit the peak but you have to bushwhack it from this trail. The aspens in the fall were pretty, and I'm sure when there's snow on Santa Rosa Peak, it's beautiful!

I wouldn't describe this trail as "hard" unless you are going up to the closed off mine shaft, as that has a stretch that is a bit difficult. There are two main trails here and it forks off pretty early. To the right is the trail that goes to the closed off mine shaft and has some decent views. To the left is, in my opinion, a better hike with a more gradual elevation climb and some shade for the summertime. I have yet to reach the end (hopefully soon!). Once I have done all the trails here, I will map them for AllTrails.

This is a hiking/mountain biking trail. It is well defined and moderate. Offers great views of the Sonoma range as well as the city of Winnemucca.
