Easy, flat hike. We were able to hear and see many different species of birds. Trails are poorly marked or not marked at all.

I visited this historic site many years ago while working in Omaha. Very well maintained. Nice visitor cen dter. A must do if into history.

Long trail but lots of fun!

Monday, August 18, 2014

despite what they tell you when you call the park phone number, the trail system is not maintained, nor is it mowed. The flood of 2011 deposited about 2 feet of silt over the preserve, burying the trails, which are now overgrown with tall weeds. If you can find the trails, it's like walking on beach sand, if you can get past the cottonwood saplings and sand burrs. frankly, the Boyer Chute seems to have been completely abandoned for all except motorists. If you plan on leaving the parking lot, you might find yourself wanting a machete.

Bits of the trail are still there, still a great place to hike.

---PLEASE BE AWARE--- The Boyer Chute National Wildlife Refuge was destroyed by the flooding in 2011. This trail (and others in this location) no longer exists. It will take many years for this place to be reclaimed. I have posted some pictures to show you what it looks like now. Disappointing.
