Cool hike, not as busy as some of the shorter hikes nearby. Quite rocky and on a narrow pathway once you make the turn off the main trail. Lots of little stream crossings throughout. Beautiful bowl with streams feeding into the lake, make sure you go on a clear day if possible. Mosquitos the whole way but much worse at the lake. Enjoy!

Hiked the road from avalanche campground up to the loop, 8 miles. Then continued down the trail 2 miles, turned around and went down packers roost trail. Had to take shoes and socks off to cross a river, encountered a bear on the trail, reconnected with going to sun road and hiked back to avalanche campground. 20 mile adventure for sure. Oh yeah, and it rained most of the day. Accidentally paused recording for half a mile too, so missed out on that stretch.

Difficult but rewarding hike. You may question your sanity on the way up but the views are worth it! Don’t assume the steep hike down with be any easier than up. My legs were screaming for flat ground by the end.

We did Trailhead to Trout Lake. The views at the lake are stunning and worth every bit of the difficult hike! the views of McDonald Lake on the way back was also worth it! However, there are a few things to note. The distance is not 3.7miles out and 3.7miles back. it is 5.5miles out and 5.5miles back. Not 7.5miles round trip, but 11miles round trip. Plan your day with those distances accordingly. It was difficult up due to no shade until you reach about half way then it is a steep down hill to the lake that has a ton of switch backs which made the return difficult. Near the lake there is a point in the trail that is overgrown. We pushed through with our arms high to get through but a bushwhacker or machete would have been nice. BUGS/MOSQUITOES

Amazing trail. It is difficult, but it’s definitely not the most difficult trail I’ve ever done. The views are SO worth the hike! We ran into about 8 mountain goats and some deer!

My friends and I just did it yesterday! The bridges are not put in yet and you can't get to the glacier via the traditional route. What you want to do is start from the bridge before the trail sign. from there, follow the river up to the large waterfall. stay to the left of the waterfall and you will eventually connect to the rest of the trail. We stayed left of the trail for most of the way. There is still quite a bit of snow up there but totally doable if you feel comfortable walking on steep slopes of snow. I recommend bringing an ice ax and snow trekking poles to keep you steady. Microspikes are not necessary as the snow is too slushy. Keep following the winding snow path until you get to the chute with the staircase. Once there you are home free! Totally doable but recommend making sure you know the route first and have experience with hiking in snowy conditions!

trail open with parking at lake McDonald lodge. full around 8am-3pm. perfect day hike! Avalanche lake was more scenic but this trail was more fun and relatively private steep elevation increase at first but worth it after that. I’m very scared of heights and there was only 1 slightly concerning part. a little overgrown and muddy (but it was fun that way). LOTS OF MOSQUITOES at the lake. We also did the fish lake trail (sign posted at the sperry junction). It was ok

Gorgeous! We paired this with Fish Lake and Snyder Lake for a really long day. This was by far the star of the day.

Serene walk through the hemlocks that appear spared by the 2017 fire. Paired this one with Mt. Brown and Snyder Lake. It was a really nice contrast to the other two.

Really beautiful trail through the canyon over mini streams. Lost a star because it is pretty overgrown in sections. Bug spray is a must. We paired this one with Mt Brown and Fish Lake
