on Silver Run Loop Trail

This was beautiful mid-May on a weekday afternoon. Saw two other folks- one running w dogs, another a bicyclist. Wildflowers blooming. Rock creek rushing nearby. Download the map to stay on course, otherwise you may find yourself meandering into a side trail of switchbacks and climbing a mountain you hadn’t intended.

Hiked 5/17. At about 3.7 miles it gets REALLY SNOWY. Like feet of snow. To get to the lake itself you merge left off the trail at about 4.65 - 5 miles. However, I don’t think anyone has made it to the actual lake this year? There was no trail/footsteps up to the lake. Hiked until 5.3 and turned around. Basically two miles of hiking through 2-3 feet of snow. Boots/socks were soaking wet. Bring poles. Moral of the story - the snow needs to melt so I would give it some time :)

Great trail but impassable without snowshoes above Lower Basin - we saw no tracks above the first lake. The first lake is also still iced in. The snow for the last 1.5 miles was very deep. Saw many poorly equipped hikers turn back.

This trail was lovely. As of this morning, the snow was extremely deep in some areas, but still doable. We didn’t have snow shoes and we managed. Many others on the trail did have snow shoes or skis and they seemed to have a much better go of it than we did. We made it with relatively few wipe outs, but with countless steps falling through the very deep snow. I’m rating as 4 stars for that reason just because of the weather, so I’m sure it is much easier during the summer. Regardless, it was absolutely beautiful.

4 stars because we didn’t make it to the end, as I got sick of navigating the snow fields, to see if the lake is worth it. Went about 3.2 miles in about 2 hours so very slow going with the snow and trying not to slip, before turning around. Very slick, fell a few times, snow is thigh deep in places if you aren’t careful to stay on a hard packed area. Trail follows the river for the most part, very windy. Beautiful area, look forward to trying again later in the year.

Lots of snow up there right now. I'm 5'2 and the deepest drifts come up to my hips. Wasn't able to make it to the lake due to the snow pack.

Hiked 4/25 in the AM, did the second loop. Hike was very doable even with snow. Part of the trail is packed, probably from XC skiing, so you're able to walk mostly on top of the snow without too much trouble. But there are deep spots to posthole in the snow.

Excellent XC skiing Feb 16, 2020. As others mentioned the parking lot gets full easily and there is decently high use of the trail. We skied the No. 2 loop with the pup. The uphill was fairly intense when we couldn't get into fresh snow (due to being so heavily packed and slick). But the creek side was absolutely gorgeous and provided some amazing skiing. Everyone on the trail (skiers, snowshoers and hikers) were courteous and friendly. Most folks had dogs with them (all of the dogs were friendly and well behaved). Can't wait to go again!

Absolutely beautiful and loved our time. Only downside for some would be not enough parking and trail is heavily trafficked. We spent much of our time off the beaten path exploring the creek. Was one of my favorite days since moving to Montana.

Amazing trail for snowshoeing! I went on February 9, 2020 and it was a gorgeous day. I brought my pups and they had a blast. The trail was completely covered in snow. I recommend getting there early as the parking lot was full when we came back.
