Lots of people taking their happy dogs. So many trails to choose from, you can hike half a mile or ten miles, however you feel. Beautiful golden fields, looking down into colorful Missoula. Drizzled most of the time, but when the sun came out it was dazzling.

There aren’t many views until you get to the summit. The AllTrails track takes you completely off trail to get there. I found if you stay in the trail until you can see the lake, you’ll find a good use trail up to the peak which would have been a lot easier (waypoint on my route). I went down the backside to hook up to another trail around Twin Lakes, but didn’t find a good trail (read bushwhacked) until I made it al the way around to the first Twin Lake. Also tried Upper Curry trail on the way back to check out the cabin. Having done a few different trails here, I think the good stuff for hikers doesn’t begin until you see Twin Lakes. The other trails I’ve been on are green tunnels that are popular with mountain bikers.

Great trail to train for upcoming backpacking trip. First practice with loaded pack to start tackling some minor elevations.

I hiked this trail on August 3, 2020. This this is a long and 70% up hill....17.9 miles from the parking lot there and back. I took me 3.5 hours to get to the top..I started at 9 AM and ended up back at my car at about 5:30 after spending 2 1/2 hours on top of the peak, eating lunch and taking pictures and admiring the majestic views. There are eight lakes that you will see once you stand the top of this peak. You can literally see 360° what Missoula, Montana has to offer, and it is beautiful. I do suggest bringing plenty of water, and snacks. The trail is shaded about 50% and the other time you’re going to be walking in the heat and open sunlight. Also make sure you have a GPS, as the trail does have a few splits in the trials, so just make sure you stay on the right path by downloading the map to your phone or using your own GPS. Lastly, please bring your BEAR SPRAY..I only hiked this once, and I had the pleasure of having a large male blackbear walk out on a trail in front of me about 25 yards. He didn’t see me but after I backtracked, I took off my backpack off and grabbed my bear spray.. as I turned around and looked up he had came about 15 yards and was standing on his back legs looking up at me, that’s when I shouted and used the bear spray.. their are best that use these trails day and night, so just please be aware if you’re riding mountain bikes, hiking or walking your dogs. It is a challenging hike but worth every picture and view once you get to the top!! one of my favorite hikes of all time and I’ve been some places!! HAPPY HIKING

My first solo hike in the US! It’s a beautiful trail that follows the river. Lots of mountain bikers on the trail - I was the only person walking. Not much wildlife around, but did run into a baby snake sunbathing on the trail! Overall, a lovely hike!

I LOVE THIS TRAIL!!! Many trail options to try (I recorded my path within this app so I wouldn’t get lost). Dogs must be leashed the first 1.7 miles, but may be off-led after that. Be sure your pup has good recall, as there are families with children, horses, bicyclists, and plenty other dogs there. The one restroom I saw on trail was closed due to Covid. I read another review that listed very little shade available. I did not find that to be the case, and was there from around 10:00am till 12:30pm. The trails I took did not have a lot of cumulative elevation, just gentle ups and downs. The paths were either gravel, larger rock, or dirt. Rattlesnake creek was beautifully clear, shallow and running a very swift current. Very enjoyable, and I will definitely be back.

Only went a short way because it was a hot afternoon and mostly in the sun. There were reports of bear sightings and we didn’t have our bear spray

Pretty chill area, I took a few turns that didn't follow this route exactly as I was in no particular rush. You can honestly make the summit to the top as easy or as hard as you want to but I'd say just about anyone could do it.

What a terrific hike! It was a beautiful 72 degrees, gentle breeze, with an easy and well-marked path. My dog loved being off leash (must have good recall and leave no trace). Many other hikers, as well as mountain bikers were there. So many trail offshoots to choose from! I will definitely be back to explore further.

Muddy

My wife and I just backpacked into RNRAW via this trail, up to Little Lake/Sanders Lake. The trail is well maintained, but there are many creeks and low spots that will get your feet wet without some careful navigating and good footwear...and probably even with. This is especially true in the last 4 miles or so. The grade is pretty easy. We made it 17 miles on the first day--at the expense of our feet, but otherwise it was a fairly easy hike, even with a 60lb pack. We saw nobody else on foot after mile 8 (a large bridge) and only a handful of mountain bikers. The trail leaves the creek for the most part after mile 8, as you get higher into the canyon. Gorgeous hike, overall, and waterfalls/rushing water abound.

Started hiking June 27th from the rattlesnake trailhead which was quite crowded. We were planning to camp at Upper twin lakes and also restock on water there however about half a mile past the wilderness boundary (6 mile mark) we ran into some backpackers who had the same plan, made it to upper twin lake and then had to turn around and hike out as there was so much snow that they couldn’t find anywhere to camp. The even more pressing issue though was that they were unable to find any water access between the wilderness boundary and lake and even the lake itself was inaccessible due to snow cover. The last place we filled up on water was about 2 miles before hitting the wilderness boundary. We hiked out as well though we will have to try again later in the season. We did encounter a black bear on trail about 2 miles from the trailhead who did not seem shy of humans and decided to hang out in the middle of trail even while we made loud noise for several minutes. The bear was not aggressive towards us though and eventually strolled off. We encountered no mosquitos or tics. There was lots of shade, orchids, baby birds and deer. You start getting nice views once you pass the wilderness boundary.

Mountain bikingGreat!

Beautiful views , so quiet on top. Mountain flowers are blooming. Trail is in great condition. (Thank you to trail maintainers). I went clockwise around the loop, and that seems like the better way to go for me. There were lots of switchbacks on the climb up after crossing the street. The descent was steeper, and pretty fast. Took about one hour to climb to the top

Trail markings were absolutely terrible. Two wrong turns and we just took the nearest way out at that point. Beautiful flowers and the trail is very nice.
