This is a really nice ride to a beautiful meadow. We rode the trail on past the meadows and were in for more incredible views as the trail follows the river. I recommend packing a lunch and a swimsuit and making a whole day of this trail!

Yes I agree with the previous post. We hiked about 5 1/2 miles. It’s an easy hike through the forest then it opens up to the river and meadows. There were cows everywhere in the woods so don’t let them scare you!! A nice easy hike!

Awesome hike, short but steep. No rock climbing required. The hardest part is getting to blue lake as the road is not maintained past box canyon and is very difficult to traverse. There may be snow on the road up or on the saddle leading to the summit. To avoid snow, wait till at least late July to go.

Absolutely gorgeous trail. The first 7 or so miles to Horseshoe Lake are a difficult, steady climb with lots of switchbacks and beautiful wildflowers. Its early July and still snow-covered near the top, but we were able to go over the top without too much post-holing. Horseshoe Lake to Rainbow Lakes was easy and flanked by streams, unnamed lakes, waterfalls, wildflowers, and pink snow. Camped at Rainbow Lake and then completed the loop around Lake Plateau back to Horseshoe to camp the second night. Easily hiked 7 miles out the next day in a couple hours as it was almost all downhill. Quite rocky until Horseshoe and then muddy and wet from Horseshoe through Lake Plateau. Several creek crossings and the water is high and fast! Our actual mileage was closer to 30 when all was said and done. Quintessential Montana hiking and camping—highly recommended!

It's not 8.5 miles out and back at all. I'd say more like 5 to 6 at the most. The area is super cool cause the whole drainage burned down 15 years ago all the trees are growing back.

this isn't a trail so much as it is a ranch access road. scrubby and filled with cow pies.

Easy hike for great fishing.

My favorite place in the Ab-Beartooths. Hike is moderate. Shoot for late july as it is north facing. Can be done in the morning if you hoof it. Lake is spectacular. Great cut throat fishing along the bank. Peaking Crow mountain is an added bonus.

great backpacking trip with lots of lakes.

Great trip, we took 6 days and could have easily spent more. lots of opportunity for fishing, wildlife viewing and much more. There quite a few people on the trail but it never felt crowded, and only camped at 2 lakes where there were other people.

Beautiful area, several trails from the trailhead. It seems most of the people using this trail are fishermen. Easy trail. Small campground at trail head, Forest Service Cabin near by to rent. Trails well marked.
