Hiking

Loved the hike today (temps hit 50 in Kalispell). Sun and 43 degrees when I started. Glad I brought my poles as the last mile (west side of the mountain) still had 6”-8” of snow. It had melted some and refrozen, so there are definite icy spots. The lake is about 90% frozen -pretty solid near the edges. Gorgeous views of the Flathead Valley and Flathead Lake. It was a perfect hiking day. I will hike this trail again.

Great trail! Did this the day after getting 4-6” of snow, so there was some breaking trail. Trail was lightly trafficked; I did the overlook trial into the notch trial.

HikingGreat!IcySnow

Hiked on Saturday, Oct 24 after considerable snowfall in the flathead valley. 2-4 inches on the ground at the trailhead was 12-16+ at the top. Constant incline and switchbacks from the trailhead, about the time it started to level out...the snow got very deep. Completed the hike to the lake just before 15:30. The last .25mi was untracked approx 16+ inches deep of snow, cold and tough in all-season boots. The view of the lake is gorgeous. A quicker trip down, Yaktrax or equiv recommended to complete this trail in the late season, wish I had poles and winter boots.

HikingIcySnow

Everyone wanting to do this hike should know it’s on the end of a very steep gravel road up a mountain top. That road gets icy very fast. Our car slid off the side of the mountain while trying to get to this hike. Best bet is to go in summer. Even with chains, snow tires and or ice picks I highly suggest you wait to do this hike until the warm months.

Hiking

Amazing hike in the snow with beautiful views! About 2 inches at the trailhead, and about 9-12 inches at times along the last stretch before the lake. Deer tracks and sightings, no bears. About 90 minutes up and 50 minutes down.

Trails are well maintained, heads up on horse droppings if you have a dog but otherwise a lovely hike moderate to easy. Well signed and easy to navigate as well

I clocked 5.82 + 1639 feet incline. Nice gradual incline and beautiful sights all the way. Money shot at the end when the lake comes into view! Gorgeous clean water. No bear sightings for me :(

Great hike. We went there an hour before sunrise and watched the sun rise at the top. It was slightly strenuous to get to the top but we also were on a timeline! Trails were easy to follow and view was breath taking

HikingGreat!

Great hike but some of the trails are very narrow and steep with loose gravel so you better wear good hiking boots. We had hiking sticks as well which was very helpful. We are beginners and moderate is a good description for this trail. Views are spectacular over Flathead Lake, the whole valley and finally Birch Lake. Getting there took us about 2hrs (taking lot's of pictures and enjoying the views.) About 1.5hrs for the way back. Oct. 4/2020

HikingGreat!

This was a moderately challenging task for us as it was our first hike on this trip to Montana. Our goal was to follow trail 7, the alpine trail to birch lake for the 6+ miles route. We were a bit stumped when the lake did not appear on the trail map but it did appear on Google maps. Google prevailed and we were rewarded by reaching it. spectacular views throughout! only downside was a tricky Jewel Road to the parking lot. Good 20 minutes of rough gravel roads and oncoming traffic.
