Great trial. A light snow had fallen the day before, so it was a little slick on the rocks. But, overall, a beautiful trail. It starts out as an aggressive ascent, but it lessens as you go.

Started just as it began to snow, about 3 inches when we reached the lake. Well worth it!

Love this trail. Has picnic areas, benches, bridges, babbling river & waterfall.

This is a really nice hike to a very pretty lake. Go early.

Less busy than storm castle, better views

Did this the weekend after Labor Day and it was an instant favorite. The top is the payoff - moderately steep switchbacks with stunning views lead to a rock formation with super cool caves, keyholes and a summit rock with outrageous views. If you’re in shape it’s a quick 2.5-3 hours up and down. Highly recommend!

Well worth the climb! Stopped at several of the offshoots to check out the views.

Exactly as described - moderate difficulty and traffic. Beautiful trail that is supper well
Maintained and more or less follows Cottonwood Creek..

Really amazing trail! I hiked it solo on 9/16/18. I was afraid of bears but did have spray. Just like everyone has posted, it is a moderately rocky trail so watch your step, almost no flat portions but no exposed slabs or anything like like, worth the hike!!!! Note, the rocks were a bit slippery because it had rained the night before. Make sure to wear hiking shoes. The trail took me under 2 hours to summit and a bit over an hour to descend. I am from CT and am used to hiking steep trails in the White Mountains but I am not used to the elevation. Bring water, a snack, and take your time.

The lake is freezing but I recommend jumping in anyway.

Stunning views for the duration of this trail.

Less busy trail. The portal creek road is challenging, best to have 4x4 or AWD with high clearance. Worth the drive and hike. Bring water, bear spray and your fly rod.

Busy trail. Best to head up early and on the weekday. Bring your fly rod, water and bear spray. Worth the rocky hike.

Easy, dog friendly trail.

Loved this hike. I’m a beginner hiker so this was a bit difficult but it was beautiful and worth it. There are not very many flat spots so it continuously goes uphill but the lake at the top is breath taking!

Great hike, my son even made it and he’s only 5. Beautiful spot.

This is a very good hike. We had just gotten off the plane when we hiked it so it seemed harder than it really is. I loved how there were lookout points along the way that you could stop at and just take in the view. The changes in terrain were also very cool. Of course the finale at the top was amazing. The view and the rock formations up there are definitely worth sticking it out.

This trail is great. Very short but it has some decent elevation changes so it keeps your heart pumping. The trail itself is very well groomed and taken care of. The Gallatin river runs right next to the trail the entire time and there are plenty of spots where you can climb down and enjoy the water. The falls at the end are gorgeous and if you walk down the stone steps to the base of the falls there's a great swimming pool there and even a small area to do some rock climbing if thats your thing. I definitely recommend this one!

horseback riding

Took this trail on horseback for the first time last weekend and I loved it. The trail itself was pretty smooth with minimal rocky spots. A few mild switchbacks in the beginning but still very easy to see what was coming ahead of you. The trail was a little wider then a horse most of the way but would periodically widen out and there was some small meadows to pull over and let the horses graze. If you were to meet up with another group of horses it could be tricky to pass in most places. Also make sure if riding horses that they are good with bikes, people and dogs because there were quite a few hikers, dogs of leash and mountain bikers (Which is to be expected being in Bozeman) Everyone we came across was courteous and seemed delighted to see horses on the trail. The river crossings were my favorite. Their were 3 nice wide shallow crossings. Horses must cross through the river because the bridges are not made for them. There was on section about midway that had a pretty steep cliff to one side. We rode until you reach the Y and turned back.
I was able to turn my 3 horse slant load trailer and short bed pickup around with no trouble in the parking lot and park alongside the road. If your trailer is larger I would recommend getting there early or checking out the parking lot before hand because it can get crowded. Over all great trail that I will definitely ride and hike again!!!

8/11/2018. Stayed at the Garnet Mountain lookout cabin for the weekend. It was a little Smokey but the 360 views were amazing. Highly recommend!

This was a nice slow hike through the woods. I got to the parking lot at around 830 am on a Friday thinking it would be crowded, but I was one of a couple of vehicles there. The trail is rocky but very doable. I had no problems with the trail or the hike. I seemed to be the only person on the trail at that time of day. it wasn't until I was getting close to the lake that younger hikers started passing me. It is a beautiful lake with wonderful views. On the return hike to the parking lot, the crowds were just heading up.

this was an awesome trail for the whole family. my 4 yr old did the entire route and my retriever loved it. Great Family Hike!!
