This was a great trail. It starts out with most of the elevation. It’s not quite 2 miles to the start of the lake. But if you follow the path almost to the end you’ll end up walking 2 miles one way. We went after it rained and it was VERY muddy. So be prepared. Also horses use this trail which makes it a little dirtier. Not great for fishing. Overall, a great view, very still water and a shorter hike compared to many other trails.

Nice views from the top and not very hard trail. As others indicated, this trail should be rated moderate. I was a little disappointed in the terrain. Most of the growth looked to be within 10 years old so not the beautiful forest I would have expected.

Beautiful views on both sides of the lake! Worth the steep climbs, little mud and bugs! Some very steep climbs, but manageable even with a 6 year old. There was also some muddy spots and shallow water running on the path for a little portion. Bugs were not too bad, but it depends on what you are used to. We’re from WI and mosquitoes are terrible in the summer.

Great hike for a beautiful lake and Mountain Views. First half was uphill and tough but then it flattened out and doesn’t take long to get to the lake.

Easy, beautiful trail hugging the west side of MacDonald creek. No elevation change. Fantastic scenery.

Hiking

Arrived by 7am, Road closed from Logan’s Lodge. Had to hike maybe 1 1/2 - 2 miles on the road up to McDonald trail. Great trail for families with hardly any elevation. Saw deer and very few hikers who reported moose near the marsh. Nicely shaded with ferns and moss throughout. Muddy in some spots. Crossed a small creek 10-15 feet from trail had to walk back up to reconnect to main trail where we hiked to the end. Large boulders and nice view of falls.

Steep incline initially but manageable with kids on our backs. I recommend walking sticks or hiking poles for this this one. The trail is very narrow and you will brush up against vegetation the entire way through. People were great about stepping off and social distancing. The trail was mostly muddy. You walk through a few shallow creeks as well. The views if the lake are great with mountains in the background

We did this hike on 6/27 while we were visiting Glacier National Park. Very steep beginning but levels off and leaves you with a great view of the lake and mountains along the way. Great way to give your legs a break from the longer hikes at GNP. Some bugs and mud along the way but bring bug spray and you’ll be good to go!

Stunning mountain views from both ends of the lake! At the foot of the lake, the trail forks and the path to the left takes you to a small rocky beach, which is definitely worth a stop. Then continue on to the north shore for a whole other view. Like all other reviews say, it's crazy steep for about 3 different sections in the first 1/2 nile, but then casual from there. We came here when East Glacier was still closed during the COVID reopening and it made us feel like we got a little taste of the East Side.

Needs some more time to marinate in the heat. Would not encourage anyone not expecting a risky hike to make it up to the lake yet, but still incredibly beautiful. The major crossing of Devils Creek is very treacherous, I was swept away on my return and the route I took to get around on the way up is not much better. The snow is still very present up at the higher alts and made one section of the trail not traversable and required some very sketchy climbing. That said, it’s an incredible hike, one of the most exciting I’ve done due to the conditions, and extremely rewarding once you reach the lake. Lots of bear activity around the lake and on my return I spotted fresh lion tracks somewhat off the trail.
