What a lovely trail! I would do this one again and especially a little earlier as the meadows of wild flowers were wonderful, but how much more a few weeks ago! It was an easy trail and only a few switchbacks at the top - but since the falls are falls, of course you must climb a bit. I must add that driving in was absolutely breathtaking! Like a Lamar Valley wow! The Flying D May be private but they have taken every effort to keep it picturesque. I only wish I had brought my acrylics or watercolors. I loved this day.

Beautiful trail! After the saddle it's a little difficult to scramble to the top with all the loose rocks. Especially without poles! Didn't need any water shoes, there were some bridges for crossing and nothing you couldn't cross barefoot if you wanted to spare your hiking shoes. Very pretty wildflowers this time of year (early July). Would highly recommend, but probably not for novice hikers.

Hiked with our two toddlers and it was long (for hauling them) but the views kept us going. If you’re not looking to reach the falls it’s worth it to hike with kiddos as long as they’ll last. Went on a cool day so there weren’t many flies but suspect that would change given the amount of horse traffic in warmer weather. Would definitely do this again. Saw a black bear on Ted Turner’s land on the drive back to Bozeman, which was an added bonus!

One of the most beautiful views ive ever seen at the top. one of my all time favs.

Great hike for all ages and abilities. Go past the falls to the meadow for an added bonus!

Hike is easy for the first 3-4 miles and quite strenuous for the remaining few. Rocky, steep sections prove difficult, but the high mountain terrain, striking views, and fly fishing make the trip more than worth it.

What a beast of a trail. I live at 300' elevation and decided to tackle this monster while visiting. I've hiked all the best trails in Virginia but this was better than all of them. Wasn't that hard to reach the saddle, but proceeding right to summit was incredibly difficult. It's nothing but loose rock or rock scrambles to the summit after the first several hundred feet. I definitely wouldn't have made it without two poles. I would be very cautious while attempting, I had nobody with me and took my sweet time to ascend. Two hours from trail head to saddle. Two hours to summit. Also, the beginning of the trail confused me, stay right instead of going left up the hill. Hopefully that'll make sense when you see it. Lastly, when you reach the saddle the trail goes to the helmet and quickly declines. Instead, find the stack of stones with a stick upright in the middle. There's a trail that puts you mostly half way to the summit.

Fairly easy to the saddle. Then steeper and trail a little less clear. Fabulous views in upper half. Some loose footing in upper third. Recommend one pole for top half.

Great hike for kids and dogs. Not heavy with people traffic. Signs are posted as you walk through to learn about your surroundings. The trail head is across from the parking lot.

Hiking trails are great for an all around cardio-strengthening workout as you get a strong interval training on the short up and down hills.
Off and on shady and sunny.
The views aren't too shabby either.

One of my favorites.

Beautiful creekside trail with mountain view. Several open meadows with flowers galore. Easy trail until a more moderate half-mile uphill to falls. Saw a grizzly on the drive out, within a mile of the trailhead.

Jeff & Jody August 27, 2017. 1st hike of year. 4.25 hours round trip- 12.8 miles. Sunny. Saw bison, elk & mule deer on way in thru Ted Turner's ranch. Saw 2 mule deer run from Bison on way out.

My fiancé and I tried to hike this trail May 6th but the road to the trailhead is closed until May 16th. We ended up walking up the road for about 3 miles. To get to the waterfall and back it would have been something like 11 miles. Though we were literally walking on a road we saw a moose, buffalo, deer and it was beautiful. We are looking forward to trying the actual hike one day. But would have loved to know the road was closed before hand. Make sure you check before you get your heart set in seeing a waterfall!

Pros: Pioneer Falls and Creek, beautiful scenery through Flying D Ranch access road, moderate grades
Cons: Heavily used horse trail, horse droppings

This trail is rated as an 'easy' trail. The first half is easy, but the second half should be listed as 'moderate'. Nonetheless, the payoff was worth it as the waterfall was very nice.

Very nice hike to Helmet- Sphinx saddle. The continuation down and around the Helmet, isn't too bad, but requires 5or 6 creek crossings, possibly dangerous in high water. You will want wading shoes.the last mile goes on forever. Will definitely do that first half again, one of the prettiest hikes anywhere especially in early July.

The loop is a great two night hike with high alpine views and fishing. Follow 407 to junction of 410 and 401. 410 is considerably shorter but staying on either will complete loop; be ready for a climb either way. I recommend staying first night a Upper Falls Creek Lake or Jerome Rock Lake. From there make your way to Big Brother Lake for the second night. One thing to watch for is the junction of trails 409 and 401, a little less than a mile before Big Brother. The intersection is marked by a post but make sure you are looking for cairns. Once at this intersection look for cairn to north (401) and one to east (409). Great small wilderness with a lot of options; definitely a yearly destination for me.

This is just one more amazingly beautiful mountainous spot in Montana. I didn't quite make it to the top because the steepness was getting to me since I'm afraid of heights. And the top of Sphinx is all loose gravel, which makes it all that more difficult. I was going real slow and careful, but everyone else was blowing right past me. It does take several hours though so prepare for that.

Nice hike along a creek - didn't see any other hikers the whole time. NOTE: "trailhead" is across the street from the Beehive Basin parking lot and is now marked as the SummitView Nature Trail. Saw tons of moose poop, but no animals. Quite a few trees are down across the trail, but getting over or around them was manageable.

Great hike, amazing views (even better from the top of sphinx), make sure you give your self enough time to go all the way to the top of sphinx mountain, it not to hard just steep.
