No snow, little to no mud. Awesome day, awesome trail. Highly recommend going in the morning when it’s not too hot, and not too busy. Definitely take bug spray. Got eaten alive on the way down! Definitely stop by the far side of the lake for the plane crash site. Very cool! FYI: all trails clocks this as a 6-mile round trip hike, but I’ve hiked this twice and clocked it at 7 miles round trip.

The trail was clear of snow and mud. The dead falls have also been cleared from the trail. This hike was so beautiful and I would say it’s moderately hard. It is a steady incline with the last mike being a harder push. The creek alongside the trail and lake itself is why I gave it 5 stars

One of my favorites! Trail running is manageable most of the way up!

We hiked this trail with our 3 pups for Daddy's Day. The trail had about 1600ft of climb, many trees down we either hopped or crawled under, did not see any snakes, saw bear marks on trees starting about 1 mile from the lake. The view at the lake made everything worth it. Our pups drank out of the rushing streams, but we suggest bringing plenty of water and snacks for you and your pups. The trail was good other than the downed trees and only had a few muddy spots, the lake was spectacular.

Should have brought my snowshoes. Had to break through snow for about a mile to get to the lake. Plenty of footprints to follow though! Lake is frozen but still beautiful.

Just went today. Only two very small snow patches to lake which are easily by passed. Lake thawed.

First half-mile of the trail was muddy, next 1.5 miles were covered with snow, up to two feet at some point. Didn't make it to the lake because the snow was too deep and soft. Tried to hike along the boulder fields, but very tough. Saw bear and moose sign, but no actual wildlife. Very eager to come back when the trail conditions are better.

Amazing hike with snow the whole way. Nice gradual incline and the lake is worth the effort.

One of my favorite hikes to date. Hiked on 10/7/19. Last half of the trail covered in snow but still manageable. Pretty muddy in some parts from the snow. Didn’t see any wildlife, but did see lots of what I presume to be moose/elk tracks. Lake is absolutely beautiful. Trailhead is pretty remote and I was the only one there. Road to the trail head was okay the day I hiked but could see problems in the future with snow if you don’t have 4wd. Also I ended up hiking more like 7.5 miles total since I walked around at the lake before heading back down.

Awesome hike, beautiful lake. Saw mountain lion tracks, and saw a bear on the hike. Fished the lake the entire time, nailed brookies like they were going out of style.

Absolutely gorgeous drive! If you can take the scenic byway by Wise River, I highly recommend it. Great signage and easy to find trailhead. Could drive up in a Prius if you needed to. The trail starts through the fire-burned forest (from a forest fire in 2003) which is GORGEOUS with all the Fireweed growing. After about a mile, you’ll be mostly in the shade, and meander back and forth across a pretty stream (didn’t need to pack water for my dog). The lake itself is very very pretty. Would have spent more time exploring if I could! Definitely coming back to check out the plane crash site at some point.

Great easy hike to do for a day or overnighter! My sister and I took my mom backpacking for an overnight. It was her first time back out in 20 years! The first two miles are easy goin, with the last mile having a little more incline. The lake is gorgeous with the surrounding scenery and there's an abundance of Brooke Trout that'll bite anything you have to throw at them.

Great trail, well maintained with nice, gradual switchbacks. The lake is beautiful and the fishing was good. Small Brook trout, great for pan frying!

Really awesome trail! The road from the trailhead to the top is really rough, and we got trapped by a fallen tree.

Great trail, steady rise with two switch back areas. Lake is crystal clear with brook trout. Trees were cleared recently, trail in excellent shape.

Hiked this trail 6/5/19 and it was magnificent. The trail was in great condition. encountered snow for the last 1/2- mile, but it didn't slow us down too much. The lake was about 3/4 covered in ice but was spectacular!!

Hiked this trail on 9/20/2018. Relatively easy to moderate hike with a little bit of switch-backing during the last mile. Lots of bear scat on the trail so be safe. Bring a good bear spray and a firearm. Hike with a few people if possible. We saw no bears, but plenty of small wildlife and beautiful scenery. The lake at the top is magnificent. No snow or ice as of today. Took us a total of 3 hours in and out, including the 30 minutes we spent hanging out by the beautiful lake. I would highly recommend it as the trail has very light traffic (literally only 3 other people showed up for the hike on a beautiful Thursday). It is also very well marked throughout. Great experience!

Horseback riding

Awesome trail to a beautiful lake. The trail was clear all the way. Some steeper switchbacks at the end, but worth the climb. The lake is beautiful and we enjoyed fishing while we were there. Highly recommend. We rode in mid-September. Good fall color.
