BackpackingGreat!Off trailRockyScramble

The lake is beautiful and a couple of really nice campsites on the NorthEast corner of the lake just across the logjam on the outlet. Great fishing. This hike is a quad burner, with aggressive elevation gains, lots of up and down. The hike from Swan Ridge to the lake you will lose the trail repeatedly and need to use navigation to stay on track. It’s not difficult hiking you may just end up zigzagging a bit. After you pass over the second ridge to drop into the lake it’s a bit tricky to find the shoot that drops you down to the lake. There’s a narrow passage between cliffs that drops down fast...more of a staircase. There’s game trails everywhere above the lake so it’s easy to get on the wrong track there. We didn’t see anyone else on the trail and at the lake on a perfect weather weekend in early Oct. If you like to test yourself and a good backcountry adventure this is a great hike. Leave yourself some time though you don’t want to be navigating this running out of daylight. If you prefer sticking to a well defined trail, this probably isn’t the hike for you. Last thing, Morrell Clearwater road is the way in. When you get to where that road intersects with FS 720 the trail is on the left.

HikingGreat!

Started late. Pushed it too hard and had severe cramping. Still well worth it. Beautiful, difficult hike.

We started late in the day so it got a little cool, but that didn’t take away from the beautiful scenery. Other reviewers weren’t exaggerating when they said the beginning 3/4 mi was straight up, but the rest was fine. We were the only ones on the trail, and made lots of noise so didn’t encounter anything we weren’t prepare to see. Our dog appreciated the small critters we saw, a chipmunk and a couple of squirrels. The meadow before the lake was gorgeous, as was the lake itself. Neither of us had experienced a crystal clear echo before, and it was glorious!

Beautiful lake...definitely worth doing the loop around the lake which makes the hike a little over 3 miles. Smoke obscured the view of the mountains.

this trail is VERY STEEP. you will SWEAT. the intersection that leads to Holland peak is unmarked and easy to miss, or if you continue straight it's a mild and shady hike to Holland lake. learned that by missing the turn. a fun hike regardless. amazing view at the top but come tough and bring poles or find a walking stick.

Definitely more a rock climbing trail after the Rumble Creek Upper Lake.

HikingGreat!

Great loop hike from Holland Lake, counterclockwise. 6 hours that include leisure hike to Upper Holland then picked it up to Sapphire, then up to pass. No water in Sept after Sapphire. Trail from Sapphire over the pass and down is in great shape and easy to follow. Side hike from pass to Holland Lookout should add another hour. Alltrails Map download of USGS Topo was accurate for the trail past Sapphire.

It was the perfect difficulty level and AMAZING view at the lake. Did not see any bears but saw some chipmunks. It was a very pretty hike in the forest along the creek and very shaded. Our dog Azul loved it!

HikingGreat!

The trail is a nice gradual climb for 6.3 miles. The last 2 miles are pretty rocky and you have to really watch were the trail is due to the rock mountains. The views are spectacular and the little lakes before the main attraction are beautiful. Well worth the hike. It felt more like a moderate hike until the last two miles which I think make the rating hard due to the rock faces and terrain. Definitely would do this hike again.

If you don’t mind multiple piles of human poop with toilet paper smashed on top of it then you may enjoy the trail. Also saw a used tampon in a bush near the lake. Plan on adding another mile round trip to the hike as you will probably have to park a ways down along the road from the trailhead parking area. The trail is easy to follow, if you get lost just look for the other 100 or so people out there and follow them. Be careful as some of them may be pooping on the ground or chucking garbage into the woods. It’s an awesome series of lakes, but extremely disappointing to see how others are treating it.

FishingGreat!

Very short, easy hike with an amazing payoff! My GPS told me I arrived at the trailhead a couple miles before actually arriving but the road condition was good so I just kept on. Finally got to the trailhead. There were a couple creek crossings but the bridges were sound. I had no luck fishing, nor did any other angler I spoke with on this day but the beauty of the lake sustained me

Nice wide trail with mostly a dirt surface. There's also a well-established trail around the lake that is narrower but cut-out, about 2 miles long and flat. Some huckleberries remain along the west and south sides of lake. Loons top off the positive attributes of this enjoyable hike.

Easy hike through the woods, crossing through a creek at one point to a beautiful lake with a mountain backdrop.

Super short hike. Was very easy for kids. Had the lake all to ourselves for a majority of the day. We enjoyed swimming until we found 2 leaches (not on anyone in our group) in the water. Beautiful place.

Rained the night before so the trail was perfect on the way up. Dusty on the way down the next day. After the trail (415) merges with 35 the trail is shared with horses. It was 5.9 miles to where we camped on the far side of Upper Holland (0.3 miles past the trail to Sapphire). There were several nice campsites to choose from including several large enough for a group. There was a group of eight collegiates a few sites down but they were quiet and respectful and gone by the next morning. Day hike up to Sapphire Lakes the next day. Trail was excellent but steep. Beautiful vistas and the wildflower meadows were spectacular. The lakes are viewed from ledges above on one side or you can continue down the other way to the waters edge. Back down to break camp at Upper Holland and head down. Again, the trail down is shared with horses until the 415 split. Keep in mind that within the last two miles there is a fairly long and steep grade that you should be mentally and physically prepared for (“I don’t remember it being this steep on the way up”) before flattening out to the parking lot. Don’t forget to dip in Holland Lake to wash the dust off.

The hike was good but it was raining. Trail is in good shape but becoming overgrown in a few areas. The dirt road to the trailhead is in good shape. Beautiful view when you get to the lake, I imagine its alot better in the sunshine.
