Actually hard to give any rating as far as hiking is concerned but as a wilderness refuge for birds it is impressive. Found what we thought was the trailhead (unmarked) on the East side behind the Ninepipes Inn but trail came to abrubt end approx 750 yards in, ie an impassable waterway unless you are wearing waders or you are a duck! Doubled back and crossed main road to an "official" entrance just a few steps South of the Inn. But alas could only venture about 500 yards before encountering flooded path. So all in all a bit of a disappointment. There is a short nature trail at the Inn but it was actually closed owing to recent bear sightings!!! Had dinner at the Inn and enjoyed watching the swallows skimming across the small lake behind the Inn.

The trail depicted on the map is a road and is intended to drive on.

***ONLY OPEN JULY 15 - LATE SEPT.***

Like other reviewer posted, it’s a dirt road, not so much a trail. Great for birdwatching!

wonderful camping spot nearby and if you go at the right time you can see tons of elk doin their thang. Not much of a hike tho, super easy, and the only breathtaking views are the elk but they're great

Visited today. What an amazing place. Highway 93 runs along the east side. However, there are several access point on 93 where you can walk-in and access The Refuge. However, the real gem lies in the roads that surround the Refuge. There are so many access points that we ran out of time. We saw so many different species of Wildlife that I can't list them all. But notably, nesting bald eagles and ospreys, trumpeter swans, several different song birds. And many many deer. It was a great day. I would rate this highly as a place for birding, not as much for hiking, but you can certainly find places to enter at The Refuge and explore.

This is not a trail, it is a dirt road that is currently blocked by a gate. Sign states no public access.

Incredibly beautiful area with great sights. Unfortunately wasn't able to see any bison... but the experience and vastness and backdrops of the area provided enough glamour in itself.
