This was a wonderfully marked trail. Our family enjoyed the all of the flora. Spray for ticks. Some in our crew were "attacked" while others had none. Highly recommend this trail!

wide diversity of flora + types of terrain. wouldn’t say it was a hard or difficult hike - perhaps moderate largely due a lot of vegetation or fallen trees coupled with narrow pathways at times. fairly quiet + unpeopled.

This is a great trail. It is a good practice trail for biking the Katy Trail, but this has more dips and hills than the Katy. Also, this has plenty of parking as well as stops around restaurants, play grounds, QuikTrip, and it is safe. You can ride as little as a mile or do the whole thing down and back for a 28 mile ride. One of the best in the area.

A super flat walking or cycling trail with zero challenge except a sun with little relief. The trail is fine and would be a great spot to test new gear but doesn’t present any real difficulty. Not much wildlife visible and often you’ll find yourself between crops on a clean paved path.

the caves are hard to find. the land its hard to traverse. for that reason this is idea hiking. beautiful scenery.

Lots of cool views and just enough hills to get a nice little work out in. Took us a little over three hours. Not a heavily trafficked trail which is cool but there was an insane amount of spider webs across the trail which got really annoying after about a mile of running into them. Overall I’d say it was a good hike.

This is a well maintained trail. Lots of gravel as expected in this part of Missouri so the trail drains well after rain. Thanks to everyone that maintains the trail. It looks great and has no aggressive up or downs. There seems to be confusion about the mileage.. printed map says 24 miles, Trails indicates 25 miles, our GPS recorded 27 miles, the trail is marked with mile/half mile markers, last one we passed was 26.5. We took our backpacking gear and were using this trip to gauge our maximum mileage per day. It was a surprise when we hit mile marker 24 and still had an unknown number of miles to go. The next 3 miles were a real mental challenge. So we completed the 27 mile loop in one day with our backpacking gear and realized we are no longer 18 years old..if you try this in one day get started early and take enough gear to get through the night if you need to stop. Next time we do this trail we will split it into 2 days.

Nice trail. Marked well. Went on a Friday morning, saw several other hikers/runners. Beautiful view overlooking the Missouri River. Good workout. Enjoyed it a lot.

This is my favorite trail!!! Always clean. Everyone is so friendly. Almost everyone has their dogs there! Beautiful scenery, great spots for pictures!!!

Very good short trail with a good mix of hills and winding paths.

nice inclines, beautiful scenery!

one of my favorite places close to Nixa. Dogs love to splash in the creek after a short hike. I always go left at the bottom of the hill to the trails on that end, as to avoid hiking close to the gun range because my dogs get spooked..

Good times, camped on the side of a bluff in a hammock.

Hike from visitor center to boat dock is very flat and not scenic. But I love anything outside.

Quick hike; good hill factor and the views from the top are soooooo worth it!

Lovely hilly (for running, not for hiking), shaded trail, though the southernmost miles take you onto a busy road before you get back on the trail. Just wish it had some water fountains!

It was a beautiful trail, but poorly and confusingly marked. Even using the map here on Alltrails, somehow I wound up only going 2.3 miles. I suspect I missed a turn somewhere. More flashes, like in the state parks, would be helpful--

Nice trail.. NOT USER FRIENDLY... SIGN NOT VERY CLEAR... Will definitely do it again when I have more time.... I seen the Forts and Steps.. I DIDN'T do the steps this time BUT NEXT TIME THE STEPS IS A MUST !!!!! #Fun and Fitness with Miss B @stlhappyhourfitness

Great trail. It was well blazed and very easy to follow. We camped next to the creek and it was great. I could see of the trial could get difficult to follow when overgrown, but it's very well taken care of right now and should be the rest of 2018. There are plenty of good spots for bigger and smaller groups alike. Tons of mosquitos out there this time of year, so be sure to bring bug spray if you're planning on an overnight!

great variety of terrain, flora + fauna

Nice road for hiking, running. Great for dogs on leash, but leash is a must due to deer and other wild animal habitat. This is bear territory, so beware. Once passed barrier gate, road is basically flat along ridge top until descent to Mizzou State field station. In summer, bring water. And bug spray—ticks and chiggers are murder in season. Also pay attention to hunting seasons. Off-road trails/fire roads not well maintained.

Great trail for beginners. The middle section is steep but not horribly so. You will most likely have the trail to yourself.

My friend and I ventured here when we met up in Columbia and this was a spur of the moment wander. The trail was a boardwalk and the cave was very cool.

Just right for my skill level. There is one point after the 1.5 mile marker in the counter clockwise direction where two trees are very close together and on an up slope right after a down and corner, so in a transition I guess, that brought me to a stop both times I reached it.
There were also two logs that I kind of had to pause to go over, but that is mostly because my bike is more cross country edition and has the large sprocket on the front that many mountain bikes these days do not have.
Overall, great ride and flows well, definitely a course one could ride for a while without getting bored and at the same time improving your skills and confidence.

The end of the loop wasn't clear and it was showing that we were off the trail. Ended up going back with a quick short cut across the creek almost midway...other than that it was beautiful and scenic. Our shepherd mix enjoyed it as well and loved the creek. Good memories

I did the CCW hike as most people recommend. I started out at 11 a.m. on a Friday and the parking lot was about three-quarters full from the morning hikers. By the time I completed my hike in the mid-afternoon, there were only six other cars in the lot.

The last time I hiked this trail was about 3 or 4 years ago. Since then some of the benches have been updated. In fact, it seems there were more benches than the last time I did this circuit. Often the benches were strategically-placed at the top of a ridge that you might have just ascended on the CCW circle. Great work MDC!

Mosquitoes and gnats were an issue but no more than any other hike I've done locally this summer. I didn't encounter any standing water. All of the creek beds were dry. I probably encountered about 20 different people on the trail. Most were hikers and about 4 trail runners.

My GPS tracking via Alltrails showed my hike to be 6.2 miles. I'm a slow walker so It took me about 2.25 hours walking time. But I made a lot of stops so my complete trail time was just over 3 hours. Love this trail and hope to do it again in the fall for the better Missouri River views.

Nice park, lovely views of the river and interesting trees. I’ve walked this trail a few timed before and enjoyed it BUT I did not realize until today that it is near a shooting range. There were loud sounds of gunfire almost the whole duration of the walk, which was unsettling and distracting and why I gave it three stars. Most of the trail is also very sunny, not much shade which may be an issue for some.

Great hike! Did the north loop today and it was great. Some parts of the trail were a little overgrown but nothing to crazy. Would love to go back and see what it looks like in later fall.

Very easy walk. Decent overlook of Shoal Creek. The best that Joplin has to offer.
