great

The trail was well marked with easy access to the trailhead. There are plenty of trail maps but no bathrooms. The trail is very rocky and narrow making the rating of “moderate” accurate. My two children got excited for a bench at about two miles. They sat down only to realize a minute later that they were COVERED in termites! My five year old was in pure horror! We tried to finish the loop with the shortcut but after a quarter of a mile farther, we decided it was best to turn around. After returning back to the car and fully stripping their clothes, we also found three ticks on my husband and daughter. Heads up that this is not a young kid friendly hike. I wish we would’ve have gotten a chance to see the entire trail and what it has to offer. I gave it three stars because I’m sure it’s a good trial for others, but I wish I’d known it wasn’t for my family. Oh well, you live and you learn.

Nice hike after seeing the castle. Would be a cool trail for photographers looking for interesting natural formations.

Very cool historic site. Surprised that people haven’t defaced the structure at all. Short, simple, and lots of places to rest along the way. Great trail for beginners or history buffs.

Short interpretive trail with signs posted on different tree species on the trail.

The actual trail is 1.5 miles. Using the map for this app adds another half mile of the Spring Trail before you reach the trailhead. Going counterclockwise at the loop, the trail passes through a tunnel of trees until it loops back at the point where there are some views of the lake. The trail then passes through a boulder field and is rugged for the remainder of the trail. We met a ham radio operator along this part of the trail with an antennae in a tree who was contacting people in different states using Morse code, which was cool.

Trail passes through the woods and a glade before descending to a paved path that leads to the spring. After the spring there is a set of 216 stairs that will give you a heck of a workout. The trail then loops back to where it started.

on Devil's Kitchen Trail

We actually hiked portions of Devil’s Kitchen, Colosseum, Castle and Spring trails. The Ranger tied them all together in a loop (see photo) with one short distance reversal, totally around 4 mi and we did it in less than 2 hours with photos and a few breath-catching stops during/after the 300+ stairs. It was a great way to see the various features of the park, but overall, I think we liked the Devil’s Kitchen portion slightly better because it was denser and very little traffic. Very nice hiking, possibly 5 stars for our home state of MO but we reserve our 5 star ratings for awesome national parks. :)

Did this trail after we finished a shorter trail in the morning. Good solid footing with a few vertical climbs. Natural rock formations thru out with some very large boulders. Trees carrying lots of foliage so difficult to see lake at the midway point. My friend Kevin unfortunately carried out a soda can and plastic water bottle along with some small trash items he found along trail. Thanks Kevin.

Beautiful, relatively short hike with one steep ascent. Some slippery rocks, but mostly easy stairs in good condition. Great scenery. One gets to see the beautiful turquoise water of the spring up close and later from above as the trail ascends.
Take it easy or climb the part of the trail with stairs a few times for extra exercise :)

The trail was very hard to follow at times; but was very beautiful. When I hiked a mother deer and her fawn were in the trail, it was so cool.

Wish the trail was marked a little better; but it was very beautiful and peaceful.

Great for trail running. I prefer to run it in reverse. It isn’t as hard on your feet and knees at the end when you end at the trail head. The full trail is beautiful, but the shortcut is just as challenging.

I did a small backpacking trip with a few teenagers on this trail, and we all had a blast. Well marked trails and a nice campground!

The spring is beautiful! Worth the hike down and then back up again!

I love the solitude of this trail. I run it weekly.

I loved this trail. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to complete and take your time. Would like to come back again. Very beautiful and easy to find. If you don’t want to finish all the way, there is a short cut you can take to take across the path to the finish. Not sure exactly where it’s at but after the 3rd mile maybe. I took it. Lol would have liked to go all the way around if I had enough daylight.
