Busy trailhead on weekdays but able to walk in seclusion most of the time. Beautiful red and white old growth pines. Visitors have been stripping dozens of birch trees and destroying them recently. if you see this activity, take a photo of the vandals and send it to the DNR.

Completed this on 8/31/2019. I am going to be brutally honest - the idea and history behind the Lost 40 is more fascinating than the hike itself. It’s basically a short 1.9 mile loop with zero overlook and rather boring. The trees are said to be 300-400 years old, but the trees we saw (except for 1) were all rather average. The forest floor is interesting in that it is covered in a variety of floral and fauna (especially mushrooms). The worst part is that because it is so easy (and a holiday weekend) - there was a ton of foot traffic...people with their loud kids, strollers, and dogs. It did not feel like you were “lost” in the woods at all. My advice - save yourself the 4 hr drive from the cities.

Very easy short trail. Sign says animals are prohibited though.

Great trail. Cool to see such huge old trees. I recommend reading the self-guided tour info ahead of time, since some of the numbered posts are missing and others are out of order. Otherwise, you'll get confused and get chewed up by mosquitoes while trying to figure out where things are. Path is otherwise easy to follow and is not very strenuous. Oh, BTW, the "overlook" is no longer an overlook because it has become overgrown. No biggie. Just don't try looking for it.

nice walk through old growth. one warning. we went on a Thursday in August - late morning - and when we got back the parking lot was full. Since the quiet is one of the big attractions, go early or late to avoid crowds.

A remarkable walk thru old growth pine forest lands. The walk is short, but includes +20 information stands that inform the walker what they are observing. A walk back in a time over a century + ago.

Pretty area, trail is short. Drove 4 hours round trip to hike one mile, but it was neat!

Great short hike close to some dispersed backcountry camping areas in the Chippewa National Forest. The Ranger station never mentioned anything when I said I was going out there with my dog but the trail head has a sign declaring it a scientific natural preserve and no dogs allowed, even on leash.
