Easy trail for the family. My 3 year old ended up on my shoulders for half the trip but my 5 yr old had no problem. Lots of good little stopping points.

Great for a family adventure, and perfect for a chance to leave the city behind for a couple hours. The falls we’re fantastic to see, and you can always follow the trails down to Lake Superior for more great views!!

This was a fantastic hike! The views of the river are gorgeous and ever changing - much like the landscape. I recommend doing the loop counterclockwise. The views of Lake Superior at the very end are a breathtaking bonus! The bridge at the river crossing is still out, BUT is very narrow at that point and we had an easy time crossing. This hike took about 4 hours...and my GPS read that it was more like 7.5 miles to do the loop. Well worth it!

This is listed as moderate in the gooseberry Falls brochure. I’d call it close to moderate on the easy scale because there are a few steep spots and you can take dozens of side trails that involve some moderate climbing down or up rocks. We only ran into a few people up near the fourth and fifth falls and it connects right to the SHT so if you wanted to extend it you could. Beautiful views of the falls (that would be 200% more beautiful without the noise of the road and shrieking children)

Really nice spot to stop and see. The wife and I got lucky and beat a large crowd that showed up so it was even better lol.

Love this place! Had a great time with my kid here. Be a responsible parent and watch your children. There are some dangerous places a child could end up if not supervised. Well kept trails, and very beautiful scenery. Highly recommend!

The bridge is out indefinitely while the SHTA raises funds to build a new bridge. This is still true as of December 2017. Check for updates on shta.org.

very muddy but fun! bridge fixed

Went October 12th. Leaves were 60% done so there were a lot of colors in the trees and a very colorful wooded ground. Beautiful!
Beautiful view of Supirior a couple minute hike from the parking lot.
hike is 8-9.1 miles from Castle Danger Road to Gooseberry falls. Then 8-9.1 mile hike back over the same path to where you parked.
We hiked 16-18 miles round trip. We hauled it and competed it in 8 hours with a total of 12 minutes of breaks. Very sore legs the last 5 miles.
Lots of mud. Lots. Be prepared for that.
Well marked and easy to follow. Loved It!

A bit muddy in sections, but overall a great hike. the bridge is gone at the crossing, but we were able to pick our way across on the rocks down stream of the bridge site.

easy hike with the kids

Great little trail with beautiful views. Get there early to avoid crowds. I arrived around 9 am on a Saturday and didn’t have trouble. When I was leaving the park was packed full!

Popular hike that passes 5 river waterfalls. On the harder side of easy due to large number of steps. Interpretive signs help explain the North Shore's long geological history. Overall, a good introduction to North Shore hiking.

Great family friendly walking trails. Absolutely awesome picnic area down on lake superior.

Loved it!!! Well kept trails and clean bathrooms at the office.

lots of climbing, no bikers, which is awesome, very secluded. Will recommend to friends!

Nice little 5 mile hike with a view at the end!

heavily populated trail. very short hike to the falls. worth the quick stop along hwy 61

Pretty cool trail that follows the split rock river for about 2 miles. I warn you that the bridge is out at the point where it crosses the split rock river. Our intentions were to take the loop around but our trip turned into an in and out due to the missing bridge. Cool hike none the less, wet in some spots but still worth the hike.

This has to rank within the top 5 or 10 best drives in the U.S. The endless rivers and streams that drain into Lake Superior from the NW of highway 61 is incredible. Almost too many to name. Many have hiking trails that go up river from the highway that are worth exploring. The view out over the lake is hard to describe, and anyone who has lived near or on the ocean, would have a hard time believing this was a fresh water lake. It truly is huge. And it displays its many different moods depending on the weather. I last did this back in the summer of 88' and the water on the lake was like glass. You don't get that very often. If you have never done this drive, you need to put it on your list. It is one of our countries best!! From Duluth to the Canadian border.

Beautiful trail. Heavily trafficked though. If you have time, take the trail starting at by the campgrounds and follow the cliffs against Lake Superior and up the side of the river for the best panoramic. Just going through the parking lot and to the falls is all paved and doesn't really count as a hike in my opinion - or as a real visit to what the park as to offer. This park has more than just the main falls; check it all out!

Gorgeous! Wasn't a hike, more like a scenic, elevated walk with loads of other people, but the views are amazing, and the area is beautiful. It's a closer-in trail, and so more easily accessible to those with a short amount of time and those who need something just off the highway. Very pretty, and we spent a good time longer there than anticipated because of the waterfalls. There is fishing also located off the trail.

had a great time. will go back when I have more time!

gorgeous views of gooseberry falls and lake superior. easy hiking and very well maintained trails.
