Lutsen, Minnesota Map

we started at the park and went up the west side. The views of the river and waterfalls are fantastic near the park, but the trail veers away from the river about a mile up.
The trail is very poor with many tree roots and steep (but short) changes in elevation. With recent rains, we averaged about a mile per hour. (about half of our usual pace.) Strongly encourage trekking poles if it's muddy.

This is not an “easy” hike. I would rate it moderate+. I also recommend trekking poles if you’re doing the actual loop. Definitely go counter clockwise if you start at 61 as Trout Creek may be impassable depending on rain it was tricky today but doable. It took me about 5.5 hours as I’m a chicken and was very cautious on the descents. Overall the trail is a lot of fun. The terrain changes and there are a lot of creeks to cross and amazing views of the river. There was some confusion at county rd 45 regarding where the west trail begins.. cross the bridge and walk until you come to a guard rail that is the start of the west part of the loop. You’ll see a large SHT placard. Enjoy!

This trail was difficult with a lot of ups and downs, but the terrain offered a lot of variety making the effort worth it. It was absolutely beautiful, and I would highly recommend it!

awesome hike to lookout mountain!

This is one of my favorite hikes on the shore. My friend Scott introduced it to me. We set out on cold winters day to climb the waterfall at cut log. It was my first foray into ice climbing and I found it both exhilarating and terrifying. I have since returned several times to enjoy the path and the amazing trees found on the way. Though I’ve no intention of climbing the drip again, I hope that I may find myself back here again someday.

Lovely trail. It took me about 4.5 hours for a leisurely hike. The Trout Creek bridge is out, but today (June 26, 2018) the creek was dry, so I could walk right across. If it has rained, check http://www.superiorhiking.org for conditions before you go. Edit: after hiking some trails in the Rockies, I’d rate this one as moderate or even easy.

Beautiful views!

We hiked this section in August from Lutsen down to Temperance River State Park. Our journey included Oberg Mountain and Carleton Peak over 2 days. Great views of Lake Superior from various points along the route. More elevation change along this section than most anywhere else along the SHT.

The Trout Creek bridge on the west side of the Cascade River is out and the creek can't be crossed due to recent heavy rain. As a result, west side of this loop trail is currently inaccessible.

Nice loop or you can shuttle if you want to go one way only. Beautiful trail along the river.

Awesome hike. Lucked out on a great day. Highly recommend.

I've hiked all of the parks along the north shore and this one will always be ranked towards the top! The hike to Lookout Mountain is so worth the views you get at the top! I try to make this hike every time I travel north. Even just wading in the river down by it's mouth to the Lake Superior is gorgeous. Also, lots of good hammock hangs over the river!

Traveling up the west side of the river was great. Multiple falls and cascades justify the effort. Coming back on the east side takes you further from the water and loses alittle of the wow factor. Still a worthwhile hike.

We did this hike in June, and only the Oberg Mountain section, but the views were absolutely beautiful. The hike has more elevation than most in the area, but we took our time as there are such great views as you round each bend. Very stunning, and not too strenuous. Definitely worth the drive from Duluth.

This is rated as hard but for serious hikers it is pretty moderate. Elevation never gets above 2000 ft above sea level so breathing is easier. If you are not a serious hiker and you are out of shape this could be hard. I am generous with the stars.

Loved this hike. Gorgeous views. It was quite muddy at the beginning, but dried out as we got closer to the river. I would definitely do it again.

One of the best in MN! Take your time enjoy the smells and sights...

For MN hiking at lower elevations this is moderate difficulty but if you are used to high elevation hiking it is easy.

Cascade is my all time favorite in Minnesota!

Multiple scenic falls to see. I would not recommend to not turn back as the map suggest. Continue on the trail, keep left as the trail splits, and follow the trail up a huge hill and you will come upon another hidden treasure. explore to find out what it is! The trail loops back. As always, bring plenty of water.

Very nice climb and views. I've hiked it in the summer and snowshoed in winter. Very accessible and the switchbacks make it a pretty easy climb.

Beautiful area ad part of the trail on the way to Lutsen!

Excellent trail and STUNNING North Shore scenery! Not terribly long or difficult, fun in winter on showshoes.

1 of the most gorgeous spots on the north shore .Beautiful northern minnesota. plenty of hidden falls among the 1,000,000 years old granite stunning views of old growth forest and drop dead gorgeous views of lake superior of course. camp at the temperance river state park 1 of only 2 with electricity in a word,,,, OUTSTANDING

I've loved this trail and State Park since I was a child. The west side of the river is much more challenging than the east side.

This is a must at leaf turning time! Even my overweight wife feels this is worth the effort. If you haven't seen miles & miles of beautiful trees forming a patchwork of colors, you have to see this to believe it. There are switchbacks, but can take rests. View of Lake Superior is also amazing.
