Berni F. on Lanesboro to Fountain
The Fountain Trail is a good ride. A mixture of shade and sun. All a gentle uphill slope since it's an old railroad bed. I was exhausted but thrilled when I finished! Don't expect to find a cold drink or coffee or much of anything in Fountain once you get there. A sweet town nevertheless.
Did this section of Root River Trail round trip - Lanesboro to Fountain back to Lanesboro. This is a very nice paved bike trail. Well maintained and scenic.
As top reviewer noted - last miles to Fountain is uphill and some work ... Not steep but consistent uphill climb. But that just makes the round trip leg back a lot easier with a nice long downhill run at the start.
Lanesboro has lots of fun little restaurants and pubs. B&B's, guest houses and town camping too. Plus there is a small 'resort' on the trail (Old Barn Resort - camper sites, pool, hostel, restaurant, bar and even a golf course). Golf course looks like hilarious good fun. I generally hate golf (too many people take it serious) but this course is so small town that even complete newbie nongolfers could have a blast. Scores optional.
Also a small primitive campground about half way - state forest or county - not sure. Well water and pit toilets only.
Canoe and tube outfitters for river in Lanesboro and the resort. Drop off and pick up service. Didn't do that this time but have in past. Easy river to canoe.
Really nice multipurpose trail.
What will always stick in my mind about this trail is the last 5 miles going into Fountain. It has over a 400 foot elevation gain and is consistently uphill. After biking many miles already this day, I had saved this stretch for the final run. Oops! Anyway, this is a good trail, paved in its entirety and full of river crossings and rich in wildlife. There was one downed tree on the trail due to a large rain the previous night, but it was easy to get around. A shady canopy also follows the trail and shades the way. A really good trail for the area.
