We hiked a bit over a mile past the falls on the SHT. lots of fallen trees over the trail this time of year. many looked pretty fresh. great hike along the river. there was so much water for this time of year that it was hard to see the 'kettle'

This is the only trail I got extremly lost on because it connects to other lakes. I was terrified. When I was turning around I took a wrong turn then another wrong turn. Beautiful hike, but my worst hiking experience. Be careful!

Great hike, very rugged trail with lots of vertical. This is a very good App. The trail is pretty easy to follow for the most part. The App. really helped in a few spots that aren’t well marked and it’s easy to get turned around. We ended up doing 9.2 miles with all the vertical and exploring at the falls and Stairways Portage. The hike with breaks took us 7:56 total.

I only hiked to the overlook at bearskin but that view alone made the hike worth it. Quite a rocky trail...

Waterfall is pretty and hike is pretty easy.

Gorgeous trail! Gorgeous waterfall!
Stairs, schmairs. Yes, there are 183 (we counted). Doable and worth it to see this phenomenon!

Great short and fun hike with an amazing reward of the Devils Kettle Falls. Impressive and a nice post breakfast walk. Lots of places to stop and rest with the stairs.

The Forest Service marker calls this Northern Light Lake overlook trail. good parking at the trail head. The trail is well maintained and lightly used. We are 67 but experienced hikers and would rate this hard but worth the trek. Some rocks and roots but trail is clear. there are several spots with views of the Northern Lights lake and nearby lakes.
Nice hike. The only negative was the sound of traffic on Gunflint Trail, this time if year as people head in to BWCA.

A beautiful hike which provided moderate difficulty for my friends and I. It should be noted that there is an extended uphill walk followed by about 200 stairs down, then another sharp climb before you’re able to look down on the kettle. Keep in mind you have to do this again on the way out :)

Lots of stairs but very short ways to the falls. So cool!

I was not prepared for a hike..it was a spur of the moment idea with friends. I was in jeans and sandals. It was not an easy feat for us (being unprepared and all) but it was beautiful.

I agree I think this trail is a moderate , I won't say easy peasy ,but in the spring so cool

One of my favorite trails along the gunflint trail. Pretty steep and rocky, but great views at top. Really quick and painless trail.

Decent hike. Did it with the kids (9,11), and we made it but they were pretty tired. Under 4 hour R/T with some hustle. Tons of trees down, and the trail squeezed between the tree falls. They had been cut up, but still everywhere.

The trail takes a lot of ups and downs, and does get your heart beating with some good vertical. Waterfall at the end, but if you keep going maybe a quarter mile you can see the rose lake cliffs.

We did take a wrong turn at the portage trail, as the main trail you hike jogs around a tree and you don’t see that without doing a little exploring. It was only a few feet, but disguised.

This is a spectacular viewing hike. If you manage to go in the fall, when the leaves are turning, you are in for a treat. This hike was my welcome to Minnesota, and I am glad. The hike involves 15 unrelenting flights of stairs going down (which means going up on the way out), as well as plenty of other sets of steps. If someone in your party might have difficulty with the elevation changes, consider carefully. There are a few benches along the way.

We hiked to the West Bearskin Lake overlook. Then took the Moss Lake trail to the west. This was much more difficult. We reached the north-south portage between the 2 lakes. We visited both lakes and then walked the road back to HJL Lodge.

I wouldn't say this trail is 'easy'. It's a clear path most of the way but there are 200ish stairs one needs to climb both in and out to see the Devils Kettle. However, the cauldron is beautiful and no one knows where the water goes that actually goes into the cauldron. Strange???
