Explore the most popular hiking trails near Sturbridge with hand-curated trail maps and driving directions as well as detailed reviews and photos from hikers, campers and nature lovers like you.

Hard to rate this trail downward. The trail itself is excellent with a nice view of the river. Still I would recommend not doing the entire loop as it runs through private property at points plus the map is not entirely accurate showing the trail heading in places their is no trail. Instead explore each side separately and combine with the nearby Westville Recreation Area trail.

We did the blue trail. Nice hike through the woods. Would have added the yellow portion but the mosquitos were abundant. Use insect repellent. Parts of trail are a little mushy. Quiet and peaceful. We were the only ones on the trail.

Wear big spray

Fun trail! Would say more light than moderate, but still a nice way to end the day!

Wells trails are great; clearly marked, maintained, and fun. Lots of scenic views with the frozen lake and ice fishing to trail paths with no footprints. It was only 11 degrees, but worth it.

Love all trails at Wells!

I love Wells State park, lots of hikes for all levels. We also bring the horses there quite a bit. Very "New England" and unspoiled

Nice afternoon stroll, very quiet— late fall and we were the only ones on the trail. The trail entrance is not clearly marked (no name) so you must follow red and green blazes. Takes you through a power line field on 2 occasions, but the rest is scenic and calm.

Parked in the main lot then headed out on the Orange Mountain Road Trail. Went along the ridge trail then bushwacked up onto the higher ridge to see over at the Pond. Made the turn at the Mass Pike then came back along Walker Pond which was like glass. Really nice apres-Turkey Day trot!

Great hike. We did blue trail into yellow about 3. Miles. Easy to light moderate. Trails are well marked Will come back again !!

Moderate trail. Pretty clearly marked, did see bear poop, beware. Pug handled the heat an elevation.

We went there this weekend, as inexperienced hikers. We walked the Heart Healthy Mill Pond Trail, which was okay...the "pond" is really a stinky swamp, the first half of the trail gets pretty overgrown at points where you can only fit single file. The last half of the trail opens up and can fit 3-4 people abreast, which was pleasant. We stuck to the paved roads, which were very empty and you could hear vehicles approaching...a good hike. The North and South mountain bike trails look to be a bit overgrown at the entrances, and we didn't venture down them. We decided to try the Mountain Rd. Trail, on the beach side first. Big mistake. It starts out pleasant, if a bit narrow...and then goes vertical at 45 degrees in stages, the first two stages were mild and short, and then you hit a prolonged 10 minute incline, and THEN you hit a 5 minute almost 60 degree climb where you can't stop or you feel like you'll fall backwards. It levels off at the top, and then is a nice pleasant WIDE path on the other side. There is no indication of trail difficulties, and the topographical map doesn't really indicate elevation specifics...just that there is some. Walking the first half of either side would be fine for beginners, but the complete path should only be completed by experienced hikers with a sturdy walking stick. With the highway noise at the turn of the trail, you feel like you're in some dystopian nightmare of neverending incline and mosquitoes. Pleasant park, not a lot of people so you don't have to worry about competing for trails.

Snow was crunchy for walking. Did not walk the entire trail. Great place for walking during good weather. It's a nice leisurely stroll.

So I didn't do this exact trail. I did the much shorter mill pond trail at this park. It is very accessible especially for strollers if you want to take your little ones. Nice easy walk through the woods. About 1 mile.

Walker Pond is beautiful and the forest is too. If you have time, be sure and stop at Old Sturbridge Village while you are in the area.
