A beautiful and easy loop. Took the 2 Labs with us and let them off-leash a little ways into the hike. They loved splashing in the reservoir and exploring one of the little waterfalls. Very easy, paved trail (as another reviewer mentioned, the unpaved parts are hard-packed dirt). Absolutely gorgeous views! Worth repeat visits to tack on some of the other Dogtown trails.

A perfect dog walk. Poopie bags (a must for this drinking water reservoir) provided at the Cherry St access parking lot. Great exercise walk with 8 cardio-friendly hills in 2 miles.

Fun trail run

It is a cute lighthouse but I confirm Lyndsey's previous comment: the lighthouse is private and has been so for over a decade. There really shouldn't be a trail report for it as you can only get there if you are visiting friends in the area or disrespectfully ignore the no trespassing signs...

Extremely well marked. Not too hard but not boring either. Wear bug spray!

It's private property. You cannot go here

There is no longer public access to this trail. I found this out after I paid 30 bucks for the "pro" and drove an hour to get there.

Beautiful. Easy.

Just as great as the first time we hiked it!

The trail name should reflect that this is also the Babson boulder trail! It's just missing the boulders closest to the industrial park, on the other side of the tracks. Had such a great time exploring the innards of my home town.

Really loved this trail! Definitely best to go off the main Old Salem Road and hike the outer trails. The red trail (toward the end of our hike) got just a tad confusing and we ended up walking up to someone's property, but we actually only missed the last turnoff by about 50 yards.
Nonetheless, this was one of our favorite trails we've ever taken. Lots of wooded areas and giant stones and a really cool overlook by the water (Ledge Hill Trail). We will definitely be back to this one!

Cool if you know the history. Use an app like this to stay on track.

As with any reservoir, the varying water level warrants many return visits. Photos Aug 2012, this posting Aug 2016. More on Cape Anne at:

nice little place

Monday, July 25, 2016

I took Old Salem trail to Long hill trail. This was a moderate challenge. Lots of rocks and roots randomly sticking out of the trail. Hiked up to the scenic view of Gloucester Harbor. As I was walking this trail there were huge boulders that were tossed up there by glaciers. The rocks tower over you. Some look like they have moss or furry buildup of some sort on the rocks. Awesome hike. Need to explore more of this place. Easy to follow trails.

Love it here! And so doesn't the pooch. They've Done a wonderful job at keeping markers and maps around the trails so you never feel lost or wandering.

Very clean, quiet. Great for dogs and easy enough for a 4 year old companion. Nice view of Gloucester Harbor. Definitely coming back to explore other trails.

Nice walk. Not too crowded. Would do it again.

Highly recommended for an easy walk with clean trails and variety. Main trail popular with dog walkers but side trails much less traveled,

Enjoyable hike. Interesting glacier rocks and views of the ocean along the Ledge Hill Trail section.

Dog friendly and good set of trails. We use all year round.

Went walking here with my dog this afternoon. It's a nice loop that is relatively easy as it is mostly paved and the rest is well packed dirt. This is a great spot to walk with dogs and let them go for a swim.

Dog friendly trails. Can be off leash, but I found it better to stay leased since there are a lot of dogs. That said, the trails are clean and well marked and maps are available. Can be easy on the wider roads/paths and moderate if you choose the wooded paths. Parking lot is very small. One of our go-to trails in a pinch.

This is a very easy set of dog friendly trails. Trails are very well marked with maps available at the trail head. Parking is not that great and requires getting across a busy road which can be a challenge with 2 hyper dogs and a five yr old. Once you are inside it is well worth it.

If you stay on the paved loop it is only about 1.8 miles. Great place to take the dogs for a quick run/swim. As an added benefit there are trails off into Dogtown common with 3600acres and plenty of easy trails to hike.

Trail is easy wide dirt and paved road mix with a few small hills.Dogtown trails that run off of the Goose Cove Reservoir trails are more challenging and easy to get lost on without local knowledge. Goose Cove Reservoir trail can be overwhelmed with dogs and dog droppings.

I have to say that this is one of my favorite places to go now!! This place is very peaceful, quiet, and never that crowded. This place is ran by an association that keeps the place very very clean, and the trails well kept! All the trails are well maped out, numbered and marked. If you have never been here before, you will be able to enjoy your walk/hike with the comfort of not getting lost. And it is also Dog Friendly, so bring your dogs. Off-leash is permitted throughout the trails, but Leash Zone is when close to parking lot.
