#2 - Big Savage Mountain Hiking Trail
Savage River State ForestLength: 10.4 mi • Est. 5 h 12 m
The Savage Mountain trail is very well-marked with fresh white blazes. These are very very needed because the trail is so lightly used that it is hardly even visible in many places along the ridge line.
The 1st 1.5-2 miles of the trail are rather steep, starting at the campground 1/4mi E of the Savage River dam. The trail itself is in fair condition for the upward section. Once you approach the top it gets rather overgrown with a number of felled trees and brush making the way difficult enough to make this not a "fun" hike.
The access to the tower is a very clear fireroad (also the "high rocks trail"). The tower itself is fenced off now, but the rock outlook beyond and the fireplace & pilings of the old keeper's house are still accessible.
