Second half of the loop was completely impassable. Poor maintenance throughout. some scenic views but unfortunately lots of trash as well. Should be rated moderate as well especially for the second half.

This was my inaugural trail with AllTrails app, and I was so happy I had it. Is a beautiful setting, forested, lightly used trail, but the trail wasn’t marked well. There was a dried up water way that looked like the trail so we followed it. Thankfully, my map on AllTrails showed me how far off we were. We back tracked and kept going. You can hear beautiful song birds and see wildlife. I had my 3yo with me and I thought it was easy enough for him to do most of the time.

on Lost Pond Trail

This was a pretty fun hike despite all the rain that day (actually made it feel a bit more exciting). There were plenty of scenic views of the river and pot rocks. Saw some cute frogs hopping around. Unfortunately there was trash in various parts of the trial: towels, beer cans and even underwear. Also coming back from the mid-point of the trail, it started looking like a jungle with all the overgrowth, and the trail started becoming difficult to see. Definitely would've gotten lost if it was dark out.

Awesome trail. Lots to look at!

It was a good trail. We saw a couple young deer and had a nice time at the mill.

I’ve been to Gunpowder more times than I can count but never completed the lost pond loop. The pot rocks are a must see on this hike. Make sure you bring some swimming gear for this relaxing swim spot! I mostly liked this trail as a whole. Unfortunately when you get to the point where you loop to head back (near 95) the trail is not well marked and was super over grown. I would say we spent a good 45 minutes walking through this overgrown path. My poor pup had many thorns embedded in his fur. However the views of the gunpowder are very pretty and makeup for this part! The other unfortunate part is since the pot rocks are such a popular swimming spot there is A LOT of human trash on this trail. This made me very sad as it is such a beautiful place. Please remember to pack out what you bring with you!

Pretty solid trail

This was my first time on this trail. It took awhile to find the trailhead. Once I found the trailhead, I planned on working the loop in a counterclockwise direction. I got to the top of the loop and could not find where to continue the loop. I tried the path in the break in the woods where the electrical poles are and other paths that took me towards backyards. I ended up backtracking my steps and making it an up and out trail. Lots of wildlife on the trail. My dog and I walked up on multiple deer, a turtle, and the ranger and his horse. I would try this trail again with the plan to go in a clockwise direction to see if the loop is easier that way.

Attempted this trail, but never found the Quarry Trail (orange trail). Followed the white trail all the way until the end? Unsure if I hit Harford Rd or not. Out and back on the trail i took was about 7 miles. Only saw 3 people on the trail, couple fishing and some playing in the river.

Great trail. Beautiful scenery. Access to covered bridge and historical places.

I’ve been coming here since I was little
There are multiple trail options to choose from, you have lots of beautiful scenery around u, the river runs right by you and you can walk through it since it’s usually pretty low and you can see people fishing in it from time to time depending on its levels
Very nice trail to walk with the kids

Agree with past reviewers... trail is more easy than moderate. Not much hard climbing. Best part is the river views. This stretch of river is mostly low grade falls, which makes for nice background music.

My friends and I decided to take on hiking this summer, and this was our first trail we picked!! we brought the puppies and all had a blast, absolutely beautiful hike!! pot rocks were super cool and the purple wildflowers were absolutely breath taking. will definitely be coming back to this one!!

This is a lovely trail. I'm very new to the nature walk/hiking scene. This trail was beautiful and pretty easy as long as you don't mind getting your feet wet with the many stream crossings. We found a very nice spot to eat lunch on the pot rocks. The trail is pretty well marked, but there were a couple of times we were unsure. I was impressed with the wildflowers here. All in all, it was a great trail for a beginner!

Did this trail twice with my dogs. second time we encountered at least 6 dogs off leash. one attacked my little dachshund. We had to kick the dog off my dog to get it to stop. owner just stood there looking dumbfounded. We gave up and headed back when a second large dog off leash rushed us. on the way back a pitbull off leash tried to get to one of our dogs again, we picked him up before he could do anything. this is very unfortunate because it is a lovely trail but this experience was so horrifying I will never go back.

Ran the loop again. Missed one major turn. iPhone ran out near the end; Garmin says 1:00:23 time, 4.62 mi, 370C, 488 gain, 495 loss, and average HR 135 bpm. Recording posted.

Good and easy trail. Took six eleven-year-old boys from J. Mills to Bel air Rd and back. The small water crossing was exciting,(not shown on the map, right after the first double back) I'd anticipate it to dry up in the coming months. Enough of a slope to let beginners get a small taste of what it's like.

Great trail run on a well-marked looped course featuring it all —single and double track, on rooty, rocky, gravel, grass, and hilly terrain (501/550 gain/loss per 4.2 mi loop). I trust my Garmin’s output on elevation gain/loss over the trek’s recorded output; I don’t believe it is as accurate (see my posted recorded trek, there is a significant difference, especially when doing multiple loops). I went off course 2-3 times more so due to speed than focus at those particular points where I went off. This trail has a moderate stream crossing and plenty of sharp turns, but any lost time can be made up on the numerous straightaways. Again, great trail run.

Solid trail. A bit crowded along the stream but once you get to the elevation segment it really opens up. Great hike for the dogs and myself.

Great trail! Well marked... more easy than moderate but overall a perfect day hike!

Gorgeous, even in late winter. There was one tricky part around the forest loop where the trail is not clearly marked when you come to a river crossing and we did end up off the beaten path for about 5 minutes before finding it again. I would love to come back in the summer to see everything in full bloom. Cutting down to see pot rocks is a must. There are seats naturally eroded into the rocks where you can eat lunch. But speaking of that, something that did bother me was the amount of human trash I saw along the trail, which was disappointing.

While the main trail to the swimming hole in Gunpowder can be quite busy, most of the other trails have low traffic. This makes them great for bird and wild life watching. This is one of our favorite go to trails!

Nice peaceful hicking not busy early mornings ., no swim holes for dogs

Great in the fall

Nice hike with beautiful leaves changing colors. Definitely recommend a backpack carrier for any little ones because some of the paths get pretty narrow and there are multiple streams to cross on rocks.

Hiked this trail with a friend. I have it clocked at closer to 5.75 miles than 4.1 according to the Fitbit. Beautiful views of the water, plenty of places to stop for photos and walk out on the rocks. The Lost Pond Loop is very nice (we didn’t see an actual pond) and takes you deeper into the woods. Note, the second half of the Lost Pond Loop is overgrown, and single person only. Lots of sticky plants so be careful. Also note there are several stream crossings on this trail. Overall we still really enjoyed the trail. Hiked in autumn with beautiful changing leaves.

A nice single track trail that runs along the river as well as up into farm land and fields. It is not as scenic as some of the other Gunpowder trails. There used to be a single track that branched off past the picnic area and ran closer to the river. It has been closed due to safety concerns. In the first mile there is a water crossing that requires a dismount and there are some tight switchbacks, but otherwise it is not too difficult.
