Hart Miller Island State Park is only accessible by boat. Hiking, biking and walking are the main activities, as of now. The island, a former dredged material containment site, is currently under development. The south cell, approximately 1/3 of the island, was opened in 2016 to visitors. HMI is recognized as a major bird watching destination in the Chesapeake Bay region. The trail on the south cell is mainly a flat perimeter road installed for maintenance vehicles and tour buses. It now encircles the entire south cell. It is somewhat hilly but an easy hike or bike. There is also a short pond loop trail. As of now, during the open season, DNR provides bikes to visitors for free. The #1 reason to visit HMI is the awesome and picturesque views of the Chesapeake Bay. From this elevated trail. The 360 degree vistas are breathtaking. Knowing what to expect, comfort stops, benches, interpretive signage and shade structures make for a great place to run, hike, walk or bike. I recommend sun and insect protection.
