Hiking

A great hike and off the beaten path, if such a thing exists on Mount Desert Island. The trail up is a little tough to follow, though there are plenty of blue blazes. The best views are at the end of the loop at Valley Peak.

Not a bad hike. Road closed so you will need to hike an extra mile to trailhead. Otherwise very green and lush with a great view in the first half of the hike.

Great trail! We stayed on the rocks over to Wonderland then took the road a short distance back to the car. This is perfect for kids or just a slow paced walk.

Started at Long Pond parking lot and took Cold Brook to Barnard Mt trail then Perpendicular Trail back to Long Pong. Good but not great views on the top but Perpendicular Trail was amazing. If I were to do it again, I would go the opposite direction.

I read some folks found this to be a hard one- I didn’t see it like that (it’s all relative)., but doing the loop IS a lot of up and down. We did the loop. It was 7.2 miles because the gate is still closed so I added an extra mile in and another out following the road. If you’re looking for good Acadia-ocean views you get them early with the first peak at Bald Mtn. Then you climb a bit more but it’s all woods walking- which is great but don’t expect anything like at Bald. We added a stop at Knight Nubble- there’s a little view place right after to have a snack but again, manage your expectations. The Sluiceway was fairly dry for the first half. Then you pick up the stream to follow which made the bulldog really happy! The Sluiceway goes ALL the WAY DOWN. It ends at te road and you take an immediate hard right onto Bernard Trail to go.... back up!! You’ll get your steps and/or cardo with this one. You land back at Bald Peak before heading down for the last time. After the many miles of woods it was nice to hang on the rocks for lunch and the view again. Enjoy!!

This trail was a perfect challenge! Not too long, not too hard, pretty lookouts, gorgeous forest, great trail! You tackle multiple peaks and use the Perpendicular Trail up to Mansell which is an engineering masterpiece. I’d do this one again for sure! I’d suggest going UP Perpendicular though... it’s prettier up in my opinion and could be easier on the joints coming down the other side of Bernard... more gradual. We passed by some neat spots I wouldn’t have otherwise known about. Great hike!

This was a super hike done with family. Beautiful, beautiful views. So serene. We came down Razor Back and that proved to be a great decision! Cannot wait to hike it again.

I loved this trail - perfect on an overcast morning. Brings out the pink in the rocks. Very calming and beautiful. Could easily spend ours relaxing on this trail.

Started the Great Notch trail at the top of Mansell with the cut through of Razor Back trail. Rounded it out with a nice easy hike around the pond. There is a lot of big blow downs from recent storms.

Lovely trail. Icy in December along the lake path. Also longer than 4.8 miles. All Trails app recorded 6.1.

Recommend walking this loop CW to tackle the notch climb & decent first, leaving the pleasant lakeside stroll for last. Lots of trees blown down in the forest, but trail is entirely passable. Scenic vistas are along the pond. Several trail options include treks up to Mansell summit or Bernard summit.

We got engaged on this trail! We hiked it on Labor Day weekend. While the other side of MDI was teeming with visitors, we nearly had the whole mountain to ourselves. It was a great trail for our dog as well. The best views are on the way up, as opposed to at the summit. That’s why, after we reached the top, my fiancé proposed on the way back down. We have pictures, and people say the backdrop makes it look like we’re in heaven!

Easy trail with nice coastal views. Rather crowded, but the tide pool area at the tip of the peninsula was an interesting area to poke around. Focus on getting there and having a bit of time to look around.

Easy trail with little hazards. Went during overcast and spitting weather. The reds and greens popped against the grey background, and significant wave breaks. Nice and simple, and a great find after a disappointing visit to the lighthouse.
