Nice little trail with limited, but beautiful views to the north and west.

tough climb but the view is worth every bead of sweat earned. would recommend even to those out of shape like me. I made it and would do it again.

Love this trail! As someone else mentioned, you need to continue past the first viewpoint to the sign for the summit, and then about .25 mile further for the best views.

Trail is not easy should be rated as moderate for sure. Steep in many areas. Went up the north trail and down the south trail. For sure the views were better on the south side. Trails need to be fixed in some areas where logging has been happening. Also trail is very thin in areas, in need of work.

We hiked up in the rain heading to the north first. The trail is up at a steady incline and then down with little to no level ground. I also found the trail to be a full 3 miles. We will be back to check out the views.

Nice 2 hour hike with beautiful view of the Andro and Bethel area. Moderate difficulty and well marked.

being new hiker I thought the steepness of this trail was very challenging but so worth it at the top!!! well marked and easy to follow.

Make sure to go past the first view and follow the cairns up to the money shot. Spectacular view, easy hike up, and was able to run most of the way down. Marked very well and the man who maintains the trail does a great job. Very quiet and secluded.

Amazing views at the top despite being a short hike! The trail was beautiful but steep the entire way.

Great hike that should be listed as moderate not easy. We started up the north side and lost the trail for about 20 minutes. The blue blazes need to be redone and a little closer together. Going down the south side was marked a little more clearly.

I hiked this on Thanksgiving Day, 2017. The trail was very well marked and conditions were excellent, hardly any loose rocks or roots. There were a few wet areas but they were easy enough to maneuver through and my feet stayed dry. Great view to the west via a side trail about 3/4 of the way up and a nice (partial) view at the summit.

Great Hike, this is on the high end of moderate. Hiked after heavy rains this week. Wet trail , steep in parts , rocky and lots of roots. Great ledges with views.

Typically spectacular Evans Notch area hike. Last hiked on August 10, 1991. Did the Royce Trail Loop to the top of East Royce using Laughing Lion Trail. Took 4.5 hours.

Don't be fooled by the length, this is a tough trail! Steep but totally worth it! Took me an hour and a half up and an hour down, but I'm slow. Could be tough for a small/older dog, even my lab was struggling a bit.

We hiked South trail to North. Nice trail. We had 4 dogs with us who also loved it. Pretty views from South Trail. Fun nature facts through out the hike, nice touch.

Nice trail. Felt secluded. Nice views on the ledges about a quarter mile past the summit. Had no troubles following the cairns up there. Spent the afternoon sunbathing up there. Walked to the trailhead from Crocker Pond Campground.

Only did the south trail to the memorial crash site. Heard the view was better on the south ridge, so we went back down to eat lunch there. No real summit views. Each trail has mile markers, and a couple informational signs on native vegetation which is a nice touch.

We hiked up to view the solar eclipse on 8/21/2017. The weather cooperated and we had nice views from the summit. The trail was short but steep (as reported). If you are out of shape you will be reminded of that. Overall the hike was very pleasant with a very high payoff for the effort.

Loved this hike! It certainly is steep but I'd say it's dog friendly. The view from the top was very beautiful, I bet it looks amazing in the fall with all of the foliage colors. We did this at about 10:30 am on a Sunday in August and only past one other couple. Be aware that some trees have sap on them so if you use them for leverage you might be sticky for the rest of the hike! I'd call this easy to moderate. Moderate side only being because you need some endurance for all the steep hills and rocks and if it's very humid out it doesn't make it any easier.

Spectacular forests and views. But I would rate it moderate for all the stairs and elevation gain.

I've hiked this trail numerous times in the past and it's always an enjoyable hike, especially when you don't have a lot of time. Early in the season be prepared for lots of black flies. Insect repellent is a must. It's a short 1.5 miles from the parking lot to the summit but it's steep all the way up. If you have the time I would recommend doing West Royce as well.

Easy 3 mile loop with about 1,000' vertical. From the trailhead, I hiked to the north ledges then proceeded to the south cliff. The views of the Andro are great from both, but overall the south cliff has much more to offer. I also went t the Gray Memorial and had been unaware there was a plane crash on Mount Will in 1992.

Very pretty and very easy trail. Lots of beautiful foliage on the way up this mountain. The overlook is clear with great views of the surrounding ranges. We hiked on a cloudy and hot day and were blessed with cooling rain at the peak.

What a rush! This gnarly trail did not disappoint. It took us just under 45 mins to summit - probably a record for the trail. The social media-worthy views from the top broke records for "likes" on all my accounts. Highly recommend this trail to all those looking for a quick, thrilling adventure. PSA: don't forget your hiking poles. So blessed to have remembered mine. Happy hiking, friends!

At the trail-head on 113 the sign said that Haystack Notch was 2.1 miles. LOTS of creek crossings. We went about two miles up the trail. At the top was a sign saying we were entering the Cariabo Mountain Wilderness area. Not long after that sign we lost the trail. Someone had flagged it for a few hundred more feet. But then nothing. We were not sure we were still on the trail so backtracked. We could not find any blazes or anyplace where we felt we missed a turn. So we did not continue - not wanting to be the people who need to be rescued off a mountain. Besides we were not planning on a 10 mile hike anyway.

The part of the trail we did was moderate, with the exception of the crossings. Maine is currently in a drought so those were easy, but after heavy rain they could be challenging.

Fairly nice trail, short hike but pretty steep. Went on a beautiful day in September. I love the view from the summit with the surrounding mountains. I only completed East Royce, when I have more time i'll definitely go back and do West Royce which is just under 2 miles from East Royce.
