Pretty busy spot for bikes. A good chunk of this trail is wooded, so it won't be non-stop views.

Fairly flat. Probably half of the trail is wooded, but some nice lake views are here too. Pretty busy carriage road!

Biked this path - would recommend over walking. Great carriage road to bike.

Terrific trail with predominantly flat terrain with a spike halfway through that will have you sweating as you move up the mountain. Know, the reward is soon to come as you enjoy the long downhill run which is particularly lovely as if you take the trail counterclockwise as suggested in All Trails.

A one hour loop where we skipped the Eagle Lake section of the trails. A few uphill climbs but not too strenuous. My 7 & 9 year old sons did it and loved it. Gorgeous views!

Nice walk around on a well maintained path. A lot of bikes on this path. Great little lakes to see.

This is a review of the carriage trail (which is the tail shown here), not to be confused with the hiking-only trail (also goes around the lake, but it's very different). This is a great biking trail for beginner mountain bikers. Around 6 miles total and the trail is very (very) wide and well-graded the entire way. There is one big, long hill but otherwise it's mostly pretty flat. Recommend doing the trail counterclockwise as the uphill is a much easier grade in that direction. Mostly heavily forested with short glimpses of views over the lake. Trail can also be hiked, and is dog friendly.

Please note that this entry refers to the carriage roads around Eagle Lake and not the Eagle Lake Trail which is on the south side of the lake off the carriage roads and marked on Acadia hiking maps. That trail connects with the Jordan Carry trail and on the west side of the lake running along Connors Nubble is a very difficult boulder scramble if you were expecting a groomed carriage road. They are also currently working to replace the raised walkways on the southern tip and the trail is a bit of a mess at the moment. If you get on this trail as opposed to the carriage road, do not expect an easy hike; on the west side is it definitely a more challenging 1.2 miles and will take inexperienced hikers 1-2 hours to get through.

Beautiful views, Well groomed mostly level walking and biking trail EXCEPT about 2.5 miles on from the parking area is a lakeside cutoff. I forget the name but it is about 1.5 miles long and BOULDER FILLED! wish I knew that before taking our one and a half year old granddaughter with us along with her stroller. Once we got halfway through the trail you couldn't turn back at that point and continued until we came back to the gravel trail on the other side of the lake. Be warned.

An easy pretty path to walk or bike on. It's a pretty lake to look at.

A nice path around the lake. The initial uphill was a bit of a challenge but overall it was an easy to moderate ride. Completed in late afternoon when traffic on the trail was light. Last Thursday

Easy ride except for one large hill. Beautiful views of the u-shaped valley. Gravel road through birch and pine forests.

Fun for biking. U.S. National Park Interpretive Rangers are helpful and friendly. Panoramic views are somewhat limited and pathway is often heavily wooded/shaded so good for runners. Several long grades. A few beaver ponds here and there. Not a great trail for hikers, in my opinion.

Very nice, wide open carriage trail. Enter in the visitor center and the trail head is located at the far back of the parking lot, past the bus stops. Very steep incline at the first 1/4-1/2 mile, but then levels out. Great for bikes and strollers. Loop was around 4.7 miles.

Gr8 for biking. Not very exciting for walking. Pretty good though.

Easy and a really great walk. Not many views of the lake and definitely a popular trail. If you're walking, watch out for bikers! I had a few that didn't warn us and caught us by surprise.

Just about as good as it gets for a scenic bike ride with Acadia's Park Loop Road and the large network of Carriage Roads for options!

excellent ride with the family

It was very interesting. Went during a downpour which made it very interesting. Trails were more like rivers. Started at summit and was in a cloud. My boys and I had a blast

A popular choice in Acadia National Park, Eagle Lake is a beautiful small lake that is easily accessed and a popular choice for bikers, joggers, and hikers/walkers.

The carriage road to Witch Hole Pond is easily accessed from the Visitor Center. A pleasant walk to Witch Hole Pond along a graveled path shared with bike riders makes for an enjoyable family walk. People of all ages and mobility challenges would enjoy this. You'll have to catch your breath - not due to physical exertion, but because Acadia is such a beautiful park. I joined this with other trails and carriage paths to get to Jordan Pond.

Eagle Lake is a great place for several reason, one being it is one of the key starting points for the Carriage roads. In summer and fall the Island explorer free bus system has a special van that ferry's bikes and riders from the Bar Harbor village Green to Eagle Lake, so you don't even have to drive there, catch the free van.
What many don't know is it is also a great place to fish. I have watched as nice lake trout were hauled from the waters of the lake. You can also boat on the lake as well, but swimming is not allowed because the lake a the town of Bar Harbors drinking water.
From the Eagle Lake carriage road, heading left, it is not too long of a hike to reach Bubble pond, a beautiful pond in the shadow of Cadillac Mountain, where at dusk Loons can be spotted and heard.
But Eagle Lake also has a couple of secrets. One is the steam boat that use to ferry passengers across the lake back in the days when a cog train carried people to the summit of Cadillac mountain. After the train went bankrupt, the steam boat was sunk to the bottom of the lake, where it still rests.
The other secret of the lake is the abandoned house of the Lake. Back in the late 1800's a family purchased land on the lake and started to build a house by the water. The problem was they never got permission from the town, and the town ordered the house not be built. Instead of tearing the house down, the family just left it there, where it sits today. The reason they were ordered to stop building was because the house was too close to the towns drinking water supply.
Because the path through the woods leading to the house is unmarked, it could be considered a ghost or phantom trail.

Walked/hiked a couple times over the years. Relatively flat and easy, but it's a pretty boring trail. Much more scenic routes in the park!

This was a beautiful ride even though it was a windy day. We modified the loop just a bit by taking the Carriage Trails which allowed us to explore several of the lake regions. You can view our route at this link: http://connect.garmin.com/activity/322426631

The carriage trails are fine for a hybrid bike, mt bike or cyclocross bicycle. I wouldn't try on a road bike with narrow tires. I ride a cyclocross bike since we cycle rail trails.
