Not a hard trail but def a 5 star hike in my book!

Not really difficult for most of the trail but does require hands feet and butt in some places :-)

Wouldn't rate it as hard- we got up to the top in 45 minutes, and though there were some steep portions it wasn't anything beyond an average hiker's ability. The views were absolutely amazing (can see Acadia and the ocean, the mountains around Tunk Lake, and even Katahdin if you bring binoculars) and the summit was flat and expansive enough that you could comfortably eat lunch and relax before your descent. There's a whole mess of low blueberry bushes at the top, too!

Overall a great, shorter hike that pays out in beautiful views. Would definitely recommend if you want a fun hike but don't want to commit to a full day affair! I think we ended up doing it in about 2 hours with a nice, relaxed snack break at the top.

Loved this one! It has all you would expect from an excellent hike. Nice trail head, decent climb, great summit area having a 360° plateau view, decent descent and a beautiful beach + swimming on the way back. Only a little more difficulties would be great. I still would rate it moderate compared to other trail in this community. We saw just one person on the hike, a little more on the beach (in peak season).
Make sure you proceed to the west summit, the east summit has no views at all. The recorded trail is wrong here, its too short.

Paddled the length of Donnell Pond to get to the beach. Found the trailhead from there. Beautiful 80 degree low humidity day. Parts of the trail are steep, but I wouldn't disagree if the trail was categorized as moderate instead of hard. On a clear day like this the views from the top were really spectacular. Lots of blueberries still to be found. The only negative was the tower at the top. It makes it impossible to get an unobstructed 360 degree view. We finished the loop, had a nice dip in the pond and paddled back to end the day.

Enjoyed the views at the top. It was a strenuous climb at places.

Short but testing in places. Feels long on the way up. Great views, well worth the trip.

Quiet easy trail. Lots of options to extend to other peaks.

Great moderate hike with 360 degree view from the top.

Well marked trail with fantastic views. Trailhead for the east peak is not at the Donnell pond parking area. Instead of heading left toward Schoodic Mountain on the access road, go straight for 2.1 miles. a small parking area will be on the right. Trail begins a bit further up the road on the left. The Big Chief trail connects to the other peak and Donnell Pond as well as another trail to Caribou Mountain.

love This trail!!!

It’s a short hike, but well worth doing. The trail by the beach seems to me at least to be the more difficult path up the mountain. Great views of Acadia from the top though and all the lakes in the area. On a very clear day you can see Katahdin way off in the distance. Overall definitely worth the visit.

Lovely trail, great views, not too crowded. Beautiful spot by the lake, too.

Nice hike should be rated moderate especially if you think Schoodic Mountain is hard (NOT). Great view east and south

Far exceeded my expectations. Beautiful views of Frenchmans bay lakes forests and mountains. A 360 view from the top. A great family hike with no difficult areas. The trail markers could be better so extra attention is needed

Gorgeous hike. Steep and rocky but worth the effort. Amazing views at the top. lovely lake at the bottom. We liked that there was hardly anyone there! Our chihuahua and golden made it up and down with absolutely no problem.
Make time for this hike. You will be glad you did!

Great hike! Colors are just starting. The trail is well marked but keep an eye out. There is one spot just up from the fork (that takes you down to the parking lot or to Schoodic Beach) where the rocks are marked but if you don't look carefully the trail looks like it goes to the right. You need to go left. It's a challenging hike and very rewarding.

The incline is steep, and occasionally rocky. Nevertheless, it is absolutely breathtaking once you reach the top!

Really fun, quicker summit hike. Some light scrambling, fun little side trails, and a 360 view that just won't quit. The beach is a nice return loop. Great views of the freshwater lakes and the ocean/Acadia NP. Great way to get your bearings before a weekend on the coast.

We loved this hike and will do it again!! And our Chocolate Lab, Houdini, was able to make the climb with no probem. I would really urge everyone to go to the East Peak for the best views all around! I'm not sure if it's still Franklin or Sullivan but in that area. It can be hard to find if your not familar with the area. Basically Off route 1 in Sullivan to 183 , Tunk Lake Rd about 4miles down on the left, it's part of the Donnell Land Preserve and there is a sign but the trees hide it till you are almost past. It's a dirt road that is well maintained. It forks you can go left to Schoodic Mtn which is also a great hike or go right to Black Mtn. There's a small parking spot for 2-3cars. We loved this hike and will do it again. Beautiful 360degree view. You have to go all they way to the East Peak. If feels like your going down the other side but you actually go to the other peak and it's so worth the trek. I bet fall will be beautiful!!

Great loop trail hike, amazing views!

Fairly easy hike, my 2 labs were able to complete the hike as well. This was a much shorter hike than I am used to, I'm sure could be made longer by going to the cliffs and the summit. Great view of the area...lakes, mountains, windmills.

The view was amazing, pretty good trail

Wonderful trail for a sunrise hike. Aside from the summit the trail was well marked and easy to follow. Wonderful views!

There were amazing views and the trail was a lot easier then I had expected!

It's a tough hike but the trail allows rest by flattening out after the steep inclines. Start at the Schoodic Mt trail head and follow to the top. Views of the Bar Harbor Acadia Mountains are perfect. On the way down, take the Schoodic Beach trail split down to the lake then loop back to the parking area.
