Great trail, could do without the cow pasture midway through. They were undeniably cute but paddling through their filth was not ideal.

I love paddling the Dix River.

Nice relaxing trip!! Seen so many herons but, couldn’t get any pictures of the beautiful birds. It was a hot day so we climbed up to the waterfalls and cooled off a bit before we continued our trip.

This trail has a little bit of everything. Some beautiful big trees near the trail head and great views of the river cliffs especially when leaves are down. There are helpful kiosks along the way, but more needs to be done to tell the very historic nature of the old Bowman home, the pioneer road/trail down to the river and the relationship to the frontier history of the mouth of Dicks River area. Being a native of this area, I well know the early history of this preserve, but many are not aware of just how historic this farm and preserve area is. So, some history related signage would be great to go along with the natural history. Just a really all around good trail; anytime of the year! Walking down the old pioneer road to the riiver is a must see.

no good trail markers, but the worst was the outside shooting range...no matter what direction i walked, the constant shooting noise...

There are quite a few paths on this Trail, very hard to get lost, at the very top there's even chairs and a swing!

The Dix River is a fun little paddle.
I usually park at a private boat ramp near the town of High Bridge. The cost is around $4 for kayaks and canoes. You can also park at one of the locks, but I understand it's harder to get in and out of the water.
The trip starts on the Kentucky River. Paddle past the Shakertown paddle boat, under the high bridge and the mouth of the Dix River will be on your right.
The flow isn't very strong, so it's not a very hard paddle, but the scenery is nice. There is a small rapid that will require a portage when traveling upstream, but it's pretty easy to ride out when returning downstream. Above the rapid is the dam's spillway, which is a fun place to stop and explore. We frequently stop there and have a snack and clim around on the rocks.
Paddling on past the spillway, you'll reach the dam for Herrington Lake. The water here comes from the bottom of the lake, and is noticeably cooler in the summer. The dam is the end of the line, you cant go any further.

Scenic drive past farms to trailhead with a small area to park. We met only two other hikers on the trail. Hiked to the KY River with palisades towering above, lovely. Trails are well marked & benches are placed along the way.
