Great trail! Watch your footing in some spots as there are quite a few rocks and roots in parts of the trail. I suggest going early in the morning on a weekday if possible if you’re worried about a crowd, my pup and I had the whole place to ourselves! View at the top is very beautiful. Go to kanapolis state park and mushroom rock after. It is less than 30 minutes from here. I wish I would have done that to make it a day trip!

Walking

Nice trails for all levels. Paved paths for wheelchair and stroller access. Other smaller trails “off the beaten path,” too. A nice walk or short hike within the city limits. Great for children and families.

This is a great prairie trail. There is ample parking and a visitor’s center with bathrooms, water and trails maps. The visitors employee let us know which trails were closed due to flooding. We took the Prairie Fire Loop East rather than north so we could catch the Scenic Overlook. I recommend this alternate route because we were able to see the entire Bison herd from the overlook. We went on a Sunday mid morning and there were about 10+ other families, most of which stayed close to the entrance. We saw bison, toads, and horny toads along the trail. There were a few areas that were covered in water due to the recent rain so we had to jump or walk on rocks. Please bring lots of water and sun protection as there is no shade and no seating along the way. Lastly we found a lot of ticks on us while in the grassy parts of the trail; between 4 people, we had 7 ticks on us and one was already attached to the skin so please beware.

This trail was pretty, but only if you could ignore the large amounts of shattered glass and trash. Also not really serene because it goes right behind a lot of playgrounds and park shelters. Go to shawnee mission park instead

It was a fun trail. My wife and I enjoyed the hike. Saw some wildlife along the way. We didn't plan for the ticks, very bad. It was warm, first part of August. Very well marked.

Good trail. Highly recommend pants since multiple sections were overgrown with lots of stickers. Taller hiking boots would’ve been good to wear as some spots had deep sand and crossing the dam was muddy. Decent place to bring the dogs minus the overgrown parts. Definitely a better trail for horses.

Several trails to choose from through prairie and dunes on south half and woodlands on north half. Too bad the trail signs were all gone after entrance so you really don't know which trail you're on. Nevertheless the native plants are spectacular and many birds. Trails are mowed so you don't really need to use bug spray if you stay on trail. nice get away for long walk and dunes climbing on south side. Shrubs are taking over the grasslands and this needs to be addressed.

What a gorgeous nature trail! Lots of sunflowers, Prairie blazingstar, milkweed, etc. The short loop hugs Fox Creek, and there are several interpretive, educational signs. A great hike that’s a small part of the Tallgrass Prairie Preserve.

Rode from Ottawa to Richmond and back. Trail is in perfect shape along the distance that I rode it. Pretty good shade in some areas. Mostly flat, straight, and an easy ride.
