Went in early September after a week of rain so the water level was higher than usual. It was cloudy out so not too hot. Beautiful trail. Rocktown was amazing and we were the only ones there. Spotted some deer, lizards, and turtles. Love this trail! We will be returning.

Nice loop with a neat spot in the middle to swim or just check out the rocks. Pretry easy trail. My mom hiked this trail with us and she is 82. We brought her a camp chair and she had a seat when she was tired. Very little shade so bring an umbrella is you plan to stick around. Steep entrance and exit.

Really nice hike for Kansas. Some pretty views of the lake. The small "canyon" portion of the hike is very pretty as well.

I got to the trail head around 6:30 pm. Knowing sunset was at 8:30, I was bit nervous about finishing in time. The sign at the trailhead suggested that the hike would take about 3 hours. It took me a third of the time. I walked at a pretty brisk pace and didn’t stop to swim. I ended up finishing up in about an hour. The terrain is easy with a few rolling hills. The surface of the majority of the trail is mowed grass. Easy to walk on, and I even walked barefoot for some of it. The rock formations are really quite lovely. There were a couple boats parked there with people swimming and jumping from the rocks. I saw a couple lizard and a large variety of plants. As many have mentioned, it is Kansas Prairie and there is no shade, I did the hike late enough in the day that this was not an issue.

Hot day for a hike, but that swim half way through helped with the heat. It is a fairly hilly trail, but the 7 and 9 year old with me were able to enjoy it. Going on a Saturday evening meant that the water area was pretty crowded, but we still found a spot to climb and swim. I would definitely come back and hike it again.

All depends on time of year for this trail. We went mid July and the heat was pretty bad especially without any shade. Also the scenic areas near the water were almost entirely occupied by pontoons and boats making the water access nearly impossible and a loud environment with music and beer bottles littered around the beach areas. We stuck only to the trails and ended up with a dermacentor tick on the sock despite bug spray. So make sure you do a good tick check afterwards. Despite the boats and the heat, id imagine in the late fall it would be really pretty. Lots of cacti, local plants, and rolling hills. The rock formations are also really great. Would not recommend doing this in the summer overall.

take this trail frequently to get to the best spot on the lake.

This trail was fairly easy, and about 2.3 miles round trip. We finished in right about an hour an stopped to take a lot of pictures and climb on the rocks. You will hike a loop trail through a prairie and halfway through the loop, you will come to Wilson Lake, where there are some sandstone rock formations.

This hike was awesome! Many reviews time this hike at 2+ hours, but we hiked it in about 1.5 hours. We had great weather on 12/19, cool, breezy, and sunny. We hiked with our 6 and 11 year-old kiddos and our puppy. Everyone loved it. This gem of a park was an exercise break for us on our drive out to CO, and we weren’t disappointed. The views were spectacular, and the trail was very well maintained. We topped off the day’s excursion with a fabulous lunch at Gella’s Diner in Hays, KS.

This trail was worth the walk. There is not much shade but you are walking through a Kansas prairie so that is to be expected. There was lots of birds during the hike and lizards. The best part was the rock formation by the lake. We took some time and got in the lake and swam for a bit. Well worth the walk and the water was great. Totally worth the hike. Pretty easy hike. Took about 3 hours but we spend a good amount of time down at the water.

Fabulous Kansas trail. We didn't swim, but it does go by the clearest lake in the state, and I saw some folks fishing hip deep in the water. The sign at the top of the "Rocktown Trail" says it's almost 3 miles and takes two hours. Our mapping app said we went 2.6 miles at 2.2mph for 2 hours & 10minutes. That was a tough hike, or toughish, with the sun beating down in us in 87 degree heat.

Great trail for families with slightly older children. Not equipped for strollers or wagons. Not a lot of shade, but lots of wind. We hike this trail quite frequently. No issues with bugs or ticks if you stay on the trial. Well maintained, wide tail that is easy to follow. The rock formations near the lake are amazing and fun for everyone. Water is so high right now you can slip right in and enjoy the clean Wilson water.

An easy wide mower trail, that ends up at some cool sandstone formations.

There's several mountain bike trails on the south side of the lake. Switchgrass, Hells Creek and Golden Belt. The trails have lots of switchbacks through the tall grass and next to the water. Not too technical, and few steep climbs. Beautiful oasis in the middle of Kansas, it's a perfect place to stop, stretch your legs and rest after driving along i70. You could spend a weekend here exploring the trails.

Mesmerizing...!! It can be leisurely completed in less than 3hrs including stopover at Sandstone pillars...

It was way too windy and the ground was charred from a fire, so my legs were black by the end of the walk. The limestone rock formations by the lake were beautiful.

Rock City is rated as one of the top hikes in the state. I suppose its relative to what is available in the state. Most will not find it remarkable. However, it is a nice hike through a pristine prairie, nice lake views, and yes a couple nice rock formations. It was a pleasant hike.
